[Spike isn't well versed in apology, but he's gotten better. Especially in recent years. But it didn't make it any easier, to spit out the words. When he'd first gotten his soul it had been easy enough to throw it around, but now. Now after Hell and Highwater and his Dirigible Full of Insects? It just felt like a lie.

A lot of the things he said these days felt that way.

Rapping on the familiar door, thump thump thump before prying the door open. He's bursting in without an invitation; the one from long ago held untempered. He goes to open his mouth before he realizes Peter's not there, and he manages to get over his initial panic and track his scent to the kitchen before he ends up talking to the carpet all night.]

I knew you'd still be standing, Pete, just wasn't so sure New York would be. [It's Spike's brand of a greeting.]

[ Peter would have gotten to the door eventually, really he would have. But he was busy being lost in his thoughts, like usual, screwing the cap of his water bottle back on as he stared ahead at the opposite counter. By the time he shook himself free and told himself to go get the door, it was already being burst open.

Which probably should have been more concerning, but stranger things had happened.

Shifting slightly and pushing away from the counter, intent on going to see just who needed to see him so badly, Peter rooted himself to the spot when Spike showed himself, eyebrows lifting in something sort of like amusement at the other's words. ]

Didn't have to come see me to make sure the city's still in one piece.

Selina still isn't quite sure how this happened, how she let this happen, and how she's going to separate herself from this. From him. It's probably in her, in their best interest that she say nothing about it at all. There would be far less hurt for both of them that way, were she to simply disappear into the shadows- it's not like she hasn't done it before. But she feels like she owes it to him, or maybe just owes it to herself, to say something. Apologize, maybe.

She hesitates only for a moment at the door to his office, before knocking sharply, as she usually does. ]

[Edward swivels very slightly in the chair behind his desk, turning to face the door.]

Come in.

[He knows who it is. He's been expecting her. But he doesn't rise from his chair to get the door for her. He's pursued her for long enough---now it's her turn to slink to him. It's just like that old song, isn't it?

[ And slink in she does. Despite her inner turmoil, Selina looks completely collected when she saunters into his office. She doesn't want him to catch on, but knowing Eddie, he already knows, to some degree. She even summons up something of a smile, cool and even. ]

Evening, Eddie. [ She stands at his desk, one hand on her hip. If you didn't know her, and you'd really have to know her, you wouldn't think a single thing in the world was wrong. ] Busy?

[The Doctor moves slowly around the TARDIS console. They managed to escape the planet with minor injuries. He did, anyway. Jade... well, she didn't know it yet. But there was a poison running through her veins, a living poisonous being that was seeping into her subconscious and would soon snuff the light out of her, erase her very soul.

Or it would. Except for he was going to stop it.]

[ Jade is unaware of the poison coursing through her, and as far as she knows, she came out of the conflict relatively unscathed. She does feel a little... funny, but she's chalked it up to the adrenaline rush that comes with escaping. She rubs absently at the odd marking on her neck, but otherwise hovers around the Doctor, trying to make sure that he's alright. ]

I knew we'd get away just fine!

[This is it, Dexter. Your moment of truth. If he could go back in time, well... there's no telling what he'd do different. He tried not to think of such things. But there were moments. Flickers... Where he could swear he'd seen Rita across a crowded room. Didn't he see Harry? Wasn't it the same? Doddering Daily Dexter was losing his lucidity. Or perhaps, a simpler explanation.

Grief.

Dexter himself had never believed in it, not for personal practice. But looking down at himself in bright Miami pastels - it didn't feel right for the moment and he went up to the bar to order a rare drink. He felt he deserved one, in any case.]

[So it had been weird enough asking Willow for help, and he wouldn't have done that if he had another choice, but this was different somehow. Darker, almost. Even if it would be nice to see her again.

It was a bright sunny day which really, should have been creepy enough. Spike took a seat in the fullest sunlight he could find, and sat in wait for her.]

[Tara doesn't take long to arrive. Really she's just sort of shows up and takes a seat beside him like she's always been there.]

Spike. [She smiles and shields her eyes against the sun.] It's nice day, isn't it? Are you here for a picnic?

[She looks back at him. Tara knows very well he's not here for that.]

Robert Leckie lived at 146 Carmita Avenue, Rutherford, New Jersey. Of course, the cab driver who had brought him here all the way from the bus depot in New York hadn't known the streets too well, and so Leckie had found himself standing on a street corner with his seabag over one shoulder and a copy of his enlistment form with his home address clutched in his hand. He'd been discharged from the Marines, even though the last four years of his life felt more vivid, more real to him than any other part of it. Amnesia, the doctors had called it, post-traumatic anterograde amnesia or something of the sort, wiping away most of his long-term memory and leaving only the most recent events clear in his mind. He'd been lucky to survive that mortar, the way the debris had knocked off his helmet and given him a blast to the head that had resulted in his standing here, in the town where he'd supposedly grown up, without any idea of which way to go.

He'd tried to find out about his past, about his buddies in the Marines, tried to get ahold of them to tell him who he was. But he hadn't been able to - too much red tape and confusion and letters that never seemed to arrive on time, though he had discovered that the men he'd considered his friends were still alive. But that was all he had, and nothing else - any letters from home he'd had were long washed away by the jungle, that he could remember, how it was hot and wet and went against all things manmade, including man himself.

He stood on the corner for a long time, but eventually the sun started getting low on the horizon and he figured he'd better start trying to find his way home, to whatever home and family he had, before the long afternoon shadows got any longer. And so he set off down the road, cap perched at an angle on his head to accommodate the gauze bandage still affixed over his right temple and ear, and tried to whistle some jaunty tune or another to search by. Today was going to be quite a day, he could tell already.

Six months and three days since she'd last gotten the last letter. Six months and three days since she'd last felt any sort of happiness or hope or anything. Now life is just... there. And despite her father's efforts, despite the efforts of her friends, Summer felt as though she'd been walking through a fog, a horrible dream she couldn't wake up from. Except, she had nightmares, so many of them, her mind filled nightly of images of him laying dying. There had been no word, nothing, from him or anyone else for that matter.

Was he dead? Was he injured somewhere? Why couldn't anyone tell her?

Every day, every time she had to open her eyes to face the morning she felt her heart fracture even more, felt hope slipping through her fingers. But still, she forced herself to face it, to live, to keep going because she still had hope. She wouldn't wear black until she had to, she wouldn't put that start in her window, no way, no how. Even if she knew, deep in her heart, she wasn't ever going to see him again, that the possibility that he was alive grew smaller by the minute.

And she tried her hardest not to think of it as she walked down the sidewalk on her way back from the market, a basket tucked in the crook of her arm as she stared at the cracks of the side walk, wondering just how the earth wasn't crumbling beneath her feet like it felt like it should be. Her eyes lifted when she realized she was she was on her block, brown eyes lifting to see...

"Leckie?" There he was. It had to be him because even from behind she knew him, she knew those curls, she knew that slightly bad posture that came with leaning over a typewriter or a desk for so long. He was dressed in his uniform and... She couldn't believe it. And suddenly her heart was soaring, the earth righted itself, no longer about to crumble as she dropped the basket, eggs be damned, tears brimming in her eyes as she ran towards him intent on turning him around and pulling him down for a kiss. "Robert Leckie!"

He'd found himself eventually in what appeared to be a more residential area of town, glancing at every street sign he passed, squinting and trying to make the letters form the word Carmita but they never did. He'd slowed from a walk to a shuffle, mouth drawn in a line as he started to wonder if he ought to just knock on one of the doors he was passing and ask where the correct street was when he thought he heard a voice behind him.

He stopped, and suddenly, there it was again - his name, someone knew his name, but he only had enough time to turn around before he realized that the person calling him was running, and she was very close. In fact, she was going to hit him, and so he did the only thing he could, dropping the seabag to the ground and putting out his arms, not realizing that both gestures might be construed as memory, as a joyous reunion on his part when really, he had no idea who it was screaming his name and flying towards him. Was she his sister? His girlfriend? No one had written him the entire time he was in the hospital, but then no one had ever seemed to be able to ring his house, to get through. No one was ever home, and he'd been homebound almost before he was well enough to write letters back. And so he had no idea who he was about to meet, but the meeting certainly seemed inevitable because she was gaining fast and she'd be upon him in seconds, if that.
