Somehow she couldn't believe that he was so agreeable to it but at the same time, it didn't surprise her. Kissing felt so good. And kissing him felt better than good. It might feel fast for him but it felt right to her, even with the confusing thoughts of his situation, their situation. Her fingers curled against the fabric of his shirt with a bit of a smile against his lips, feeling warm at the memory of his most recent dopey smile and the way his lips feel against hers.

If there was anything he'd learned - and retained - it was that you should never put off until tomorrow what you could do today. You might not get the chance if you procrastinated, and he wanted desperately to pick up the pieces of his life and fit them back together until they made a picture he could understand, a picture he wanted. And he knew he wanted Summer to be a part of that, even after only two days. Any girl who had waited for him for four years deserved his trust and yes, his love, and he knew it might take a little bit of time, but as his lips moved slowly against hers, he thought it might not be so difficult to love Summer Roberts at all, even if he had to fall for her all over again. It felt like she might have him head over heels in no time - and he had a feeling it might have been like that all along, since they were kids, no matter how long it had taken him to get up the courage to ask her out, or for her to drum up the courage to kiss him. He wanted to honor that courage, not bury it, and he was determined to make every second count as he hummed softly against her lips, his own forming a smile small enough that they didn't have to break the kiss, not until they were both ready.

Summer wanted to be that person, the one he trusted, the one he'd come to love even if just thinking of it that way was strange. But she wanted it, she wanted to be in his life forever, no matter what. And if she had to make him fall all over again, so be it. She'd pick up those pieces, give them to him, and help him put it back together, his life, whatever he wanted. Her mouth moved more firmly against his, moving closer to him, knowing full well that it was a little bad to be kissing a boy in her father's kitchen. But honestly, she didn't really care.

It might not be the most well-behaved of things, kissing her like this in her father's house, but right now he couldn't really be bothered to worry about behaving. This felt right, more right than just about anything else had, and he didn't want to let it go. Not yet, not when Summer seemed to think the same thing, moving closer to him as she kissed him right back. He could feel how important this was to her, and that made him all the more determined to try, to find that part of him she knew so well, because she was quickly becoming very, very important to him, too. He lost track of time, of where they were, until the kiss finally tapered off because he had to breath, panting a little, quietly, against her lips. "I sure know that's something I would have waited four years for."

She'd never gotten to kiss him like that before he left. Sure, that second kiss ever had gotten a little heated but it was still pretty chaste compared to this. This kiss made her feel something, made her whole body feel warm. And when he pulled back, she looked a little dazed as she tried to catch her breath, smiling at him, her own dopey smile. "Me too." Her fingers curled against his shoulders before she glanced at him. "I hope you don't think badly of me for kissing you on the first date." After all it was more like third date for her. Third date and four years of longing.

He laughed, breathlessly, shaking his head as his hand slid down her back a little, fingers just brushing over the fabric of her top. He knew this wasn't the first date for her, and even if it had been... "I think sometimes exceptions can be made... and this is one of those times. I think nothing but the best of you, I promise." He couldn't help but think of how this might have gone if he'd remembered, what their reunion might have been like if he'd turned around on that sidewalk and swept her into his arms. It suddenly made his heart ache, that he couldn't do that, that he couldn't have given her that when it was something he could sense she'd been waiting for, those four years. "Like I said... I might need a little rushing, right?"

His hand moving over her back like that made the blush on her cheek blossom more, her eyes meeting with his with happy amusement as he spoke. "I'm glad you do." He wasn't the only one who thought of how different it would've been if their reunion had been different. The past few days she spent crying in her room were filled with thoughts about nothing else. But this was okay too. It wasn't perfect but it was better than she could ever hope for. "True. A little rushing, like you said."

It wasn't the reunion he's sure he would have wanted to give her, no - but it was a reunion and he wanted to try to keep her from thinking about what ifs too much, because he knew just how they could spin out of control until you could barely think about anything else. And he wanted to make now special, for both of them, in whatever way he could, in whatever way this was going to be. Because now might not be what either of them had wished for, but they had now to make into whatever they wanted. And that seemed like it would definitely do.

"And besides... with motivation like that, I might get better really fast," he teased, leaving his hand where it was, though he didn't try to go any lower or touch any more of her, though she seemed all right with how he was touching her back now. "I admit, I didn't get anything like that in the hospital. I mean, the nurses were nice enough, but they sure weren't about to kiss me or cook me dinner."

She'd take what she got and what she got wasn't so bad at all, really. She was kissing him, they were on a date of sorts, and he was willing to spend time with her. That was more than she expected to get when she woke up this morning, all-cried out. Together they could do this on their own terms and figure things out on their own time.

She laughed at his teases, looking at him with an amused sort of expression. "Well, if they did that then I'd have to go find them and give them a piece of my mind." And a kick to the rear.

It was all he could give her, right now, but she seemed to think it was enough, laughing and smiling and that was what really mattered to him. Of course, he laughed at what she said, nodding - "Well, they can't afford to fall for every poor soul who comes into their care. I imagine their job is actually pretty tough, and they probably don't get very much thanks for it." He had tried to thank his nurses and doctors, when he could - when he'd been awake or coherent, though it hadn't always been the case.

"But I have you, now - and you have me. Please don't forget that, I want to be here for you. Maybe not exactly how you imagined - not yet - but I'm still here. All right?" He was pretty sure she knew that, but he didn't want this to be one-sided. He wanted to support her however he could, with or without his memories.

"I'm thankful that they took care of you when I couldn't." Because she wasn't a full nurse or anything and she didn't even know he was in the US or alive until two days ago. Those nurses did what she couldn't.

But she wasn't thinking of that for long. No, not when he was saying all the right things, he was saying exactly what she needed to hear, and he meant every word. She leaned forward to press a kiss to his forehead, smiling as she pulled back. "You are still the sweetest, most caring man I've ever met." Memories or not. "I promise I won't forget it."

He would have let her know where he was - but he hadn't known she'd been waiting for him, couldn't have known. He wished he could have contacted his parents, told them, maybe they could have told her... but two days with them and he already wasn't sure if they'd ever even talked to Summer more than a few times. But none of that mattered now - he was here, and he nodded when she said those nurses had cared for him when she couldn't. They had, and they'd kept him alive to send him back here, and that was what mattered now.

That, and the way she was smiling, the way soft, warm lips pressed to his forehead. "Well, clearly you don't get out much," he teased, though he leaned in to press his lips to hers for just a few seconds, to prove that he was thankful, grateful she thought that. "But good. I definitely want you to remember that. This isn't something we should have to go through alone. We have each other. I'm not going anywhere."

I'm not going anywhere.

Those words eased her mind more than she can ever say, though it has to be clear by the look on her face, her face falling into an expression of utter relief. She pressed her lips to his for another moment, just letting him know how much that meant to her. She knew it wasn't his fault that he couldn't let her know where he was, that he hadn't known to find her. But the fact that he wasn't going anywhere, that he wanted to stay, that she wasn't going to experience this life alone, it was more than she could ask for.

The way she looked, just then... he couldn't help but bring his hand up to touch her cheek, feeling his heart beat a little faster at the idea that she was so relieved that he could be with her. He'd never felt that before, that he could remember, having such power over another person; it was a heady feeling, but not one that came without the mutual feeling that, somehow, if she were to be sad, he would be more than a little restless and guilty until he could fix the problem, make her smile again. Maybe that's what love felt like - he couldn't remember, but he was actually looking forward to finding out again, in a way. "I really like your smile," he said softly, thumb tracing the corner of her mouth. "It's beautiful, you know."

Summer turned her head into his touch, pressing a kiss to his palm before looking back at him as he spoke, telling her that he liked her smile. She smiled a little wider at that, even as his thumb brushed along the corner of her mouth. "Really?" She couldn't help but blush at his words. "Thank you. I mean, I really love your smile too, so..." It worked out nicely didn't. "There were times I thought I'd forgotten what it looked like." Those were the worst times. Then she find a picture of him somehow, a yearbook or making an excuse to go visit his parents even if they didn't really talk to her much.

"Really. And the way you blush, too, while we're at it," he murmured with a bit of a smile, himself, which only grew wider when she said she liked his, too. Though it turned a little sad when she said she'd forgotten what it looked like, sometimes - he didn't need to imagine what that was like, that he knew, and he was sorry she'd had to go through that. One thing he couldn't imagine, though, was, "It must have been hard. Really hard. To wait here... not knowing anything, either, the past couple of months. I'm sorry for that. I promise, if I'd known there was someone like you to notify, I would have tried a lot harder."

She didn't know what to say to his compliment before-- "Thanks." Of course, she was happy to see him him smile at her compliment, her eyes meeting with his as he apologized. She shook her head, reaching up to touch his face. "It's not your fault, you didn't know. And I don't blame you at all. I can't even imagine how hard it was for you so..."

"Well... it can only get easier from here. Right?" No, he wasn't sure of that, but he wanted to believe it, and he wanted her to believe it, too. Maybe if they believed it, hard enough... well, he knew all about how believing something didn't make it true. But this was different. This wasn't the war. This was the life he wanted back, and he wanted it to be as different from the war as anything could be. "I don't want it to be hard for you like that again. Once in a lifetime is enough - more than enough, I'm sure."

"Well, you're right here. I don't need to forget your face," she reminded him softly. She could see him everyday if he let her or even once a week and she'd never have to forget his face again. "I don't want it to be hard for you either, you know. I know it is but I want to do whatever I can to help you."

"No, you definitely don't." If he had his way, it would be more like every day that she saw him than once a week. He knew that once he got busy, that might be difficult, but if he could convince her to keep working at the hospital if he got a job there... that might be a bit more likely. And it would be nice for both of them to have a friendly face around.

"I don't think it could be as hard with you helping me as it would be any other way," he said earnestly, reaching over to take her hand, squeezing her fingers gently. "So I think that's an awfully good start. It's got to be easier, together, than it is apart."

Summer wouldn't leave her job if they'd take him on too. But sometimes the hospital was over staffed and she'd happily give up her job if it meant he could have one to make a living. She didn't actually need to work but hopefully they both could work at the same time. That would be the most ideal situation.

She squeezed his hand back, smiling at him. "I think so. If we work together, I know we can do anything."

They'd just have to see what the situation was like, but it would definitely be nice to share his shift with someone like her. Of course, first he had to get hired, which he planned to go and do the very next day. He'd had enough 'lazing around' in hospital beds, himself, he wanted to get started on the rest of his life. And now that he had a direction, he was going to take it.

"I'd bet on it," he grinned at her, thinking that with Summer there to keep him motivated, to push him... maybe they really could. Though then he caught sight of their dinner, laughing and saying, "Except finish dinner, if we get too distracted." Well, kissing was a whole lot more interesting than eating, could you blame them?

Summer would, of course, do everything she could to help him get the job. And if he didn't get hired for some reason, she's help find something different. She didn't mind being his motivation or help him keep it because she knew in her heart he'd do the same for her, even this memory-less Leckie. Of course, she did laugh when he mentioned their food and she realized they hadn't finished it. "Oh, right. Well, I can reheat yours if you want, I should probably keep my lips away from yours so you can finish."

He would definitely do the same for her, she was already an important part of his life, whether it had been for two days or for twenty years. He grinned a bit, starting to scoot his chair back but then he decided to just pull his plate over so he could sit closer to her, shaking his head. "No, no - it's fine. It's still warm. Though I'm going to have to keep my lips away from yours, too, you need to make sure I don't eat all of your hard work." He definitely wanted to make sure she'd gotten enough to eat, too, even if he could probably eat twice as much as she could - and would definitely be going for seconds once his plate was clean.

"I don't mind if you want to eat all of it," she put in with a grin, reaching for her plate to pull close and finish her meal. She'd make him as much food as he wanted, as he could eat because for some reason she found satisfaction in helping him. So seconds or thirds, she wanted to give him anything he wanted or needed.
