Summer wouldn't leave her job if they'd take him on too. But sometimes the hospital was over staffed and she'd happily give up her job if it meant he could have one to make a living. She didn't actually need to work but hopefully they both could work at the same time. That would be the most ideal situation.

She squeezed his hand back, smiling at him. "I think so. If we work together, I know we can do anything."

They'd just have to see what the situation was like, but it would definitely be nice to share his shift with someone like her. Of course, first he had to get hired, which he planned to go and do the very next day. He'd had enough 'lazing around' in hospital beds, himself, he wanted to get started on the rest of his life. And now that he had a direction, he was going to take it.

"I'd bet on it," he grinned at her, thinking that with Summer there to keep him motivated, to push him... maybe they really could. Though then he caught sight of their dinner, laughing and saying, "Except finish dinner, if we get too distracted." Well, kissing was a whole lot more interesting than eating, could you blame them?

Summer would, of course, do everything she could to help him get the job. And if he didn't get hired for some reason, she's help find something different. She didn't mind being his motivation or help him keep it because she knew in her heart he'd do the same for her, even this memory-less Leckie. Of course, she did laugh when he mentioned their food and she realized they hadn't finished it. "Oh, right. Well, I can reheat yours if you want, I should probably keep my lips away from yours so you can finish."

He would definitely do the same for her, she was already an important part of his life, whether it had been for two days or for twenty years. He grinned a bit, starting to scoot his chair back but then he decided to just pull his plate over so he could sit closer to her, shaking his head. "No, no - it's fine. It's still warm. Though I'm going to have to keep my lips away from yours, too, you need to make sure I don't eat all of your hard work." He definitely wanted to make sure she'd gotten enough to eat, too, even if he could probably eat twice as much as she could - and would definitely be going for seconds once his plate was clean.

"I don't mind if you want to eat all of it," she put in with a grin, reaching for her plate to pull close and finish her meal. She'd make him as much food as he wanted, as he could eat because for some reason she found satisfaction in helping him. So seconds or thirds, she wanted to give him anything he wanted or needed.

"Well... I'll try and save some for you," he laughed - and he would, though there was more than enough for both of them to get their fill. In fact, he was pretty sure that Summer would always make sure he had enough, whether it be food or love or simply companionship.

And that feeling was true - if anyone took good care of him, it was Summer. Oh, his parents took care of him, let him stay until he'd managed to talk to Summer's uncle and set up accommodations with him in exchange for helping out around the house. The man was kind enough and sympathetic to his cause, and certainly didn't mind when Robert brought home the groceries with the salary he'd been earning as an orderly in the hospital. It wasn't exciting work, per se - cleaning and changing sheets and carrying whatever needed carrying back and forth, up and down the floors - but he felt like he was helping, and he often saw Summer when they both had a shift at the same time, although she didn't work full-time like he did.

He'd gotten to know her, much better - on his own, at first, starting over, but he'd wanted to know her and she'd been willing to tell him almost anything he asked. And much to everyone's delight, his memory had been coming back - though slowly, in spurts, and things were still awfully patchy. But he remembered parts of growing up, certain events, remembered that time he'd tried to kiss Summer when they were kids and she'd smacked him for the effort. He even remembered parts of the letters he'd written to her - she'd let him borrow them, and sometimes when he'd read one or the other, he could specifically remember writing it to her.

It had been fall when he'd come home, but it was July before he knew it. He had been taking Summer out on dates fairly regularly since he'd gotten back, as soon as he'd gotten a job and she'd been satisfied that he wasn't spending all his money on her. And the Fourth of July fireworks put on by their town and the few neighboring ones together seemed like a perfect date - a late-afternoon picnic and some fireworks to watch while cuddled together. And so he showed up on Summer's doorstep that afternoon in his service uniform - she hadn't gotten to see much of him in it and if there was ever a day to wear it, it was today - with a picnic basket hanging from the crook of one elbow as he knocked.

It was amazing how quickly time flew past. And even more amazing was the progress Leckie was making. While he wasn't back to his former self, his memories were coming back in pieces, small pieces, but pieces nonetheless. And much to Summer's delight, it seemed to encourage him in the most positive of ways. And he seemed to relish in his life at home, in his work. While she knew it wasn't exactly the dream job, she hoped that he found pride in helping and just working to earn his wages. And he seemed much happier once he was away from home, she was both sad to say and relieved.

They'd been spending plenty of time together, keeping Summer's hopes up in a positive way, going on dates, eating together, seeing one another at work. She was overjoyed to be with him in any way, honestly. So when he asked her to go to the fireworks display, she was more than happy to accept. There was no other man she wanted to go with. She pulled the door open with a smile, wearing a lovely dress, that wasn't too relieving but not too modest, her cheeks rosy. "Hey," she said with a shy expression as she took him in his uniform. "You look so handsome."

With every memory that came back, Summer seemed to smile a little more - not that she hadn't been supportive, regardless, but when he'd made it his personal mission to get that smile to come out as often as possible, that in and of itself was encouragement for him. But he couldn't say he didn't want his life back, too, to figure out who he was and who the people around him were. Maybe he didn't get along wonderfully with his parents, but they were supportive in their own way - they still treated him mostly as if nothing had ever happened, and while it could be aggravating... sometimes it was comforting, too. That maybe by not letting this change affect the way they treated him, they were supporting him in a way they couldn't or wouldn't with words.

But Summer had still been the most instrumental, and when she opened that door with that look on her face - oh, he felt like the luckiest man on earth, memories or no. He was about to say she looked lovely but she beat him to it, making him glow a little with pride - that was why he'd worn it, after all, to look nice for her because he knew she liked it. "Thank you," he murmured, stepping a little closer. "But I'm nothing compared to you. You look amazing."

Summer didn't mean to treat him differently than she had before or act as though she couldn't be happy if he never got his memories back, but she was, after all, only human. She wanted him to be happy no matter how he was but she knew that he would be at his happiest (hopefully) when he was his normal self again, being able to live his life normally. She'd been supportive as she could be, buying him a new journal to write in, letting him borrow the letters he wrote to her, and answering any and all questions he had for her.

Of course, when he stepped in closer and said she looked it amazing, it was definitely worth any effort she put into helping him and looking her best. She stole a quick kiss from him before glancing back to see if her father had come to the door as well. But he remained in his study. While her father had always had a liking for Robert Leckie, any man who could make his daughter so happy and serve the country was good in his book, he'd been wary since Leckie had returned home, sans memories. He was worried on the strain it would put on Summer, emotionally, if Leckie never got his memories back. And he'd been cautious in encouraging their budding relationship, staying close to home, insisting on being around whenever Leckie came about the first few times. But eventually, he'd lightened up, even as he brought doctors in to study Leckie. They all said the same thing, he just needed time and patience. And Summer was intent on giving Leckie both. "Thank you--" she stopped as she spied the picnic basket, grinning at him. "Is that for us?"

She was doing a practically superhuman job of supporting him, he knew, and he was trying to do nothing but rise to the challenge. And Bob really couldn't blame Summer's father - if a man was the sum of his memories, then what was to say that losing those memories didn't change him? But he really tried to treat Summer well - and as more time went by, it seemed that maybe those memories weren't gone forever, and that meant that he could still be the kind of man her father trusted with his daughter.

All the same, he knew the man liked to see them off, all the same - a perfectly reasonable thing, really - but he didn't see Dr. Roberts coming up behind Summer, even as she moved to press a short kiss to his lips, making him smile as her gaze fell on the picnic basket. "It sure is. I thought we could have ourselves some dinner before the show, how does that sound?"

Summer's father would likely be there sooner rather than later to see them off but for now, Summer was able to steal another kiss from him as he confirmed that the basket was, unsurprisingly, for them. Grinning at him, she smoothed her hands over his jacket, just feeling the fabric with great interest, liking the way it felt beneath her fingertips. "That sounds amazing. Thank you for being so thoughtful. All I thought to bring were two cokes and some cookies." She pointed over next to the door to show a smaller basket with the coke bottles sticking out of it. "You're amazing."

Just as she was about to steal another kiss, Dr. Roberts came out of his study, making himself known with a clearing of his throat before moving to greet Leckie with a warm smile, a handshake, and asking him how he was faring.

"Well, given that your cookies have been known to elicit marriage proposals... I think it's safe to say they're a good choice," he teased back with a grateful smile, because they'd make the perfect dessert during the fireworks, he was sure. "But you're welcome, all the same. I thought the idea of a picnic sounded nice, is all."

Of course, just as she leaned in, he did catch sight of her father over her shoulder - who cleared his throat a moment later, making the two of them step apart and Leckie gave him a sheepish but bright smile, shaking his hand firmly and saying he was doing pretty well, still remembering things from time to time, but feeling a lot farther along than he had been just a few months ago - and all thanks to Summer. He definitely wanted to let the man know his daughter was amazing, and commendable and that he meant to treat her well, with or without his memories.

Of course, Summer's heart leapt a bit when he mentioned marriage proposals and how they were a good idea. (At least she jumped to that conclusion even if he meant something else.) "A picnic sounds amazing, Leckie."

She moved so the men could greet one another and Leckie sang her praises, confirmed that he was doing well. She watched them both before turning to her father. "We're going to watch the fireworks. We won't be out too late, I promise." She moved to kiss her father's cheek before grabbing her basket and then taking Leckie's arm. Neil gave them both a look before smiling, telling them to be safe and have fun.

Well, it certainly wasn't as if he didn't think they were a good idea - he had a feeling that if he'd had his memories back he might have asked her by now, but even if he'd like to, it would take a lot more work on his end, getting better, before he could even think about it. But somehow, it was always there, in the back of his mind - here was this girl who had done so much for him... how could he possibly think of walking away from her, ever?

And walking away was definitely the farthest thing from his mind as Summer assured her father they wouldn't be out too late. He confirmed that he planned to bring her straight home after the display was over, and was admittedly relieved when her father smiled even as she slid her hand through his arm. He promised they would be safe, moving to pull open the door so they could head down the steps. He figured they'd make for the central park, where they might not be alone but there were plenty of little, tucked-away spots they could get a bit of privacy and still see the fireworks.

Summer was well aware of the fact that she thought she'd be engaged, if not already married by this point and time. And she thought that they'd planning their future together. But life has a way of not going as you plan and while a wrench had been thrown into her plans, she was okay with the progress they were making. She only worried, despite how he seemed now and his assurances, that one day he'd change his mind and walk away, want to find somewhere where he could start fresh and not feel pressured to be someone he used to be.

And as Leckie led her down the steps, she didn't really worry about it so much, glancing back to see her father winking at her as he closed the door behind them. She pulled herself closer as they walked towards the park nearby, which would have a perfect view of the fireworks, she knew. "Should I have brought a blanket or something?" Though, she supposed he could've put one in the basket he was carrying.

Life definitely had a way of twisting around even the best-laid plans, but he liked to think maybe they weren't so far off track. The only way he had to convince her he was here to stay was to stay, and so that's exactly what he planned on doing. He didn't plan on working at the hospital forever, but every time he sat down to write in the journal she'd gotten him, it felt a little easier, a little more natural. He had hopes of someday reclaiming that job at the paper, or any paper, for that matter. He'd find some way to do what he was good at, he just needed a little more time to get good at it once more.

Right now, though, he was happy with how Summer pulled herself closer as they headed for the park. "I brought a bedsheet, I hope that's okay?" he said - it had been easier to roll up and put into the basket, and it was warm enough outside that it shouldn't get cold later, given that it was July. "But it is something to sit on, so you won't get that pretty dress dirty. That would be a shame, and I won't be the one responsible for it," he teased, fingers moving to touch the side of that dress just briefly before they moved away again.

He was sticking around for now (and possibly forever) so she was savoring every moment of it because she'd never take his presence for granted again, ever. And she would support him however she could, however he'd let her or need her to.

"That works perfectly," she put in with a smile, glancing up at him as he spoke of her dress and preventing of it getting dirty. "It's okay, my dress won't get dirty on a sheet. So good thinking." She kept on grinning as she stayed close, leaning up to press a kiss to his jaw. "You're a sweet heart."

That was all he wanted, to convince her that he meant to stay, and that would take time, he knew - so he was all right with that. Because he was sure that time was something they had, and plenty of it, and the idea of that was nice, especially after having run for his life for so much of the past four years (especially when those were some of the sharpest memories he had).

He grinned when she approved, humming softly as her lips touched his jaw. "Because you are, and I've got to keep up with you," he countered, because she was definitely sweet, kind and giving, and he just wanted to make her happy, loved seeing her smile, like he'd told her many times. "So, do you know of a good spot we should take? Or should we just search until we find one that looks good?" He'd been the park many times by now, but not always to search out good picnic spots.

He'd told her as much many times, that she was sweet; he was quite good with showering her with compliments, just like she was to him. Her eyes watch his face as he spoke about where they should sit. "I don't care. I think we just find one that looks good since I'm sure the ones I know are probably already taken." And she didn't mind looking with him, it wouldn't be so hard to find a nice open spot. "There's always near that willow tree."

He absolutely meant every compliment he gave her, and he hoped she knew it. He considered her answer, nodding after a moment, "I think I know which spot you mean. Let's try that first, and see how it looks."

The park was definitely occupied already, some families and some couples spread out over the expanse. But it wasn't packed, and he noted a few spots as they headed for the willow tree she'd mentioned. But, as luck would have it, around the far side of the tree there was no one, like their own little private spot with the trunk of the tree and its long boughs dividing the space from the rest of the park. "Oh... I think this will work pretty well, don't you?" They could even see over to the little pond on this side of the park, where a couple of frogs already croaked even though it wasn't sunset yet.

When they found that the tree was not occupied, her smile widened and she moved to tug him towards it, looking quite happy. Her cheeks flushed some because it was in the park but somehow, it felt like it was secluded. And that had her smiling the idea of it. "This is perfect," she said with a giddy tone of excitement, looking at him before moving to put down her small basket. "Can I help you spread out the blanket?" Or sheet, whatever. She wanted to help them get settled because the sooner they did that, the sooner they could just get to talking and eating and enjoying themselves.

He liked the way she was smiling broadly at the sight of the spot - their little spot, or at least it would be for the night. "Yes, ma'am," he said, snapping to attention - hoping to make her laugh - and moving to set the basket on the ground, pulling out the sheet (which was on top) and moving to double it over and spread it on the ground under the tree. After that he moved to sweep his arm in a grand gesture towards the spot, saying, "Ladies first," waiting to let her sit before he'd pull the basket over and start unpacking their dinner. He'd brought real plates and utensils for what he planned to lay out: salad, rolls, potato salad, and bread, cheese, and chicken (which he'd even roasted himself, last night, and wrapped up in the icebox to make sandwiches with today).

Once they got the sheet settled, she moved to to sit as invited to do so by him. "Why thank you," she said in a cheeky fashion, sitting in a very lady like way. Of course, as he pulled out all the fixings, she looked very impressed, her eyes widening. "Did you do all of this? I mean... I don't mean to say that you couldn't but I'm so impressed." And clearly happy. She moved to help him, offering to help serve up anything that needed to be served up.

He grinned quite happily, especially as she looked so very impressed. Of course, her words made him laugh a little - no, he wasn't exactly a master chef, so he didn't mind the surprise in her voice. It was nice, it told him she was well and truly surprised - and pleased. "I sure did. I even roasted the chicken without burning down the house," he teased, taking a few slices of bread and setting them on her plate so she could make herself a sandwich. Though when she moved to help serve things up, he indicated the potato salad, letting her put some on each of their plates while he did the same with the salad. "It's probably good this is a picnic, though, I couldn't do anything much fancier than this."

The truth was, he had a bottle of champagne for later, but he figured they could drink the cokes she'd brought with their dinner and have that later, with the cookies. So he reached over and grabbed the two bottles, twisting the metal caps off before offering one to her.

She helped serve whatever he indicated which turned out to be the potato salad, which she added to the plates on the opposite side of where he was serving out the salad. "Well, I'm impressed. And I can believe you've been holding out on me. I didn't know you could cook." He'd helped her with a few things before but she hadn't seen him do something on his own, that she could remember. But with a house full of sisters, she shouldn't be too surprised.

She took the offered the coke with a smile and a word of thanks before she moved to make her sandwich before taking a tiny bite and humming. "It's perfect, Leckie. So perfect."
