She watched him read the poem, wondering if something that powerful, that special would bring back some sort of memory but it didn't seem to have the same effect as the other letter had. And she felt a brief moment of disappointment but she didn't really get a chance to feel it before he spoke again, asking if he could ask her something bluntly. She nodded, watching his face as he pressed on.

Her expression faded from a bit of a smile into something more serious as he spoke seriously, asking what they were going to do, what she wanted to do about them. About their relationship. She hesitated for a moment, blinking at his words as she tried to consider what she wanted. "I..." What could she say without making him feel obligated or guilty? What could she say that wouldn't make him feel like he had to stay and try. He said he didn't want to lose her and she certainly didn't want to lose him. "I'm still in love with you," she said it helplessly, her voice soft, strained with emotion as she looked down at the letters in her hands. "I... I don't want you to feel like you have to try but... just thinking about losing you after I just got you back... I thought you were dead and my heart was broken." Her eyes lifted to meet with his, brimming with a few tears she refused to let fall. "But it'd be worse if I lost you now even if you don't remember me. I know that's a lot to take but..." She wanted to tell the truth.

He wished something as simple as words - something as powerful as words - could bring everything back to him, but that didn't seem to be the case. And he had something much more important to deal with, watching her earnestly as she tried to answer his question. He wanted the truth, no matter how hard it might be to hear, but it wasn't as hard as she thought. "Honestly... it doesn't feel like an obligation, Summer. It feels like... like I've won something." He laughed a little, trying to figure out how to tell her. "I'm pretty sure every Marine wanted to come home to a girl like you saying she loved him. And here I have, and I can't even remember how it all began. But that doesn't mean I don't want to try. And it doesn't mean I feel like I have to. I want to. I've only known you for a few days that I can remember, and already I like you. I don't think that part of me has changed." He moved to set the letters down and reached out to take her hand, gently, if she'd let him. "And yes, a part of me doesn't want to hurt you, a part of me would stay just to make you smile. But I want to make you smile. I want to find out how to do it all the time. That's got to mean something, right? I think it's going to be harder for you than for me, but... can we try?"

God. Even without his memories, without being the Leckie she knew, he's still Robert Leckie. He knew exactly the right things to say, always. And right now, he was saying them, giving her hope. Because even if his memories don't come back, he wanted to try. He wanted to fight for them. And the fact that he already liked her, even after only a few days, it said something to her. Her eyes met with his, her breath caught in her throat for a moment so all she could was nod. "Y-Yes. That's all I want. I want to try." Her heart felt like it was about to pop out of her chest hearing all those things, hearing that he wanted to make her smile all the time, that it wasn't that he thought he had to, but that he wanted to. Her hand curled in his and she brought his up to her lips to kiss because until she was sure he was okay with it, she wouldn't kiss him on the lips. "I promise I won't rush you."

All he could do was say how he felt - and maybe that was something that couldn't be wiped away, maybe there was enough of him left that deep down, he was still the same person, even if he couldn't remember all the events that had made him that way. Everything he'd said was true, and he couldn't help but smile - a small, but hopeful smile, when she said she wanted to try. He nodded, letting her pull his hand up to her lips, but, "You don't have to worry about it. I've been lazing about for months." Not necessarily true, he'd been recovering. But still - "Maybe a little rushing is what I need." He glanced at her face, his thumb moving against her lips, before he blurted, "Can I kiss you? I mean, I know you did, the other day, when you thought... but I won't if you don't want me to." But if there was a time to start... now felt pretty right. But only if she wanted him to. If she didn't, he'd keep his distance, not suggest it again until she brought it up first, and he tried to make his face say that as he waited for her reply.

She smiled when he said he'd been lazing around, that she didn't need to worry about rushing. But her face slipped into something close to surprise when he asked if he could kiss her. She blinked before her cheeks flush and she, in turns, blurted out-- "Of course you can kiss me." She paused before laughing softly. "I mean, only if you're sure you want to." Another pause. "I just mean, I wouldn't mind it at all."

His smile went from hopeful to gently amused to just genuinely pleased as she managed to get out an answer in the affirmative. He knew it couldn't be exactly how she'd wanted it, but he wanted to show her how he felt, that he wanted to try this, that he wanted to deserve someone like her. It was a little awkward - funny, really - as he had to abandon his mostly-cleaned plate to scoot his chair closer to hers, but he could use the hand in hers to gently pull her toward him and carefully, softly, press his lips to hers. "I hope I wasn't such a great kisser before that you'll be disappointed now..." he murmured, hoping to feel that smile underneath his lips as they pressed to hers.

He moved closer and she felt her heart skip two beats, it was like the first time they kissed, just down the street from his house, just after he told her he was going the next day. Although, she'd kissed him and this time, he was the one leaning in to kiss her. The kiss is soft and she returns it tentatively, letting him set the pace because if it were up to her, she'd get carried away. "Before the other day, we only kissed maybe twice." The first time, then a nice long, goodbye kiss. And right now, she was not complaining.

He smiled into that kiss himself, thinking that at least they had a sort of blank slate there, without too much previous history for him to have missed out on. Though he was pretty sure even one or two kisses with her would have been missed - he could just imagine shipping out after a kiss from her, it must have been torture. Still, he managed to murmur, "Oh... well, definitely my loss, but at least you shouldn't be comparing too much..." before he tried for another kiss, much like the first - slow, feeling things out, but not without some feeling. After all, he knew that maybe what he felt right now couldn't run as deep as what she felt... but he knew the potential was there, just listening to her talk about their history. And that certainly didn't count for nothing. It was sort of like a love story that he knew - hoped he knew - could turn out right.

She hummed her agreement against his lips as he kissed her again, letting herself get a little lost in it. It was hard not to forget that this wasn't her Leckie, as their lips pressed together and it felt like there was deeper feeling behind that kiss. Her hands moved to his face to hold as she deepened it a little, forgetting herself and just letting herself take comfort in the fact that he was here for her to kiss. And for the hope that they'd find their way again.

He, on the other hand, could not remember kissing a girl much before this - and he liked it, liked it a lot, the way her lips moved naturally against his, the way her palms felt warm and comforting against his cheeks. He was more than happy to let her take it where she wanted, his hand sliding down her side to rest at her hip - but not doing anything else, not wanting to startle her or do something she didn't like. They had to take this slow, he knew that, no matter how this went right now. But that didn't mean he wasn't responsive - he couldn't not be, not when he could taste her, under the mashed potatoes and pot roast, and smell the scent of her hair... a scent that was familiar, his eyes snapping open for a minute as his kiss faltered without really meaning to.

But whatever he was trying to remember was like a word on the tip of your tongue - not quite there, just out of reach... but there nonetheless. And all he could think to do was press another kiss to her lips before she thought she'd done something wrong - because it anything, she'd done something very, very right.

She'd gotten lost in that kiss, completely. Lost in memories of written words of love, of hopes and fears, and dreams of the future that would all have to be on pause until they figured this out. Even so, she wasn't so lost that she couldn't feel the way his kiss faltered a moment later, pulling her back to reality, though it wasn't as cold or harsh as it felt this morning. Not by a long shot. Her eyes blinked open to look and make sure he wasn't too overwhelmed but he was kissing her again before she could process it.

Her hands slid from his face, just in case something was wrong and moved to rest on his chest as she kissed him for just a moment longer, savoring the experience, trying to see if there was anything different about him. Though, it'd been so long the memory was hazy and the memory of how he tasted was even hazier. But eventually she pulled back a little-- "Okay?"

He looked a little dazed when she pulled back, if only because... well, kissing her had done as much for him as it had for her, somehow. He didn't have memories to get lost in, but he had the promise of memories, of a past and hopefully a future, all wrapped up inside the soft taste of her lips. "Yeah," he murmured, watching her face as he nodded. "Yeah, I just... you smell... good. Familiar. I mean - good and familiar," he tried to clarify, laughing softly, reaching up to touch her hair with one hand, gently. "Like I almost remember something. I just can't quite find it. Not yet."

She knew that look, the way he seemed a little dazed, it made her smile despite herself. He'd had the same look on his face the first time she kissed him, though it was followed by that dopey, sweet smile of his, the one that made her know he was really, truly happy. Still, what he said was as good as any dopey smile. "Really?" She'd hadn't changed her bathing habits in the years since he left, so it wasn't a surprise that he might recognize it. She smiled at him, at his words, leaning into his touch. "It's okay. It's still something."

He liked that smile - he'd never get sick of it, and he hoped he'd told her that before. He planned to tell her plenty now, but right now he smiled back, nodding a little, liking the way she tilted her head into his fingers. "Yeah. It means it's still there, right? That it's not just gone." That was an option he liked better, because it was much more desirable than thinking his whole life was just gone, wiped out by that blast, inaccessible to him while everyone around him knew it so well.

Of course, he knew he was just being silly when he smiled a little and murmured, "Maybe if I kiss you again?" She was more than welcome to tell him to can it.

It wasn't gone. And someday, they'd get it back, she was sure of it. Until then, she'd be with him every step of the way if he'll let her. And right now, he was, especially as he asked if he could kiss her. She laughed, softly, her eyes meeting with his, a little sparkle in them. "Maybe so, yeah."

Once she seemed onboard with another kiss or two, he grinned - probably that dopey grin that she knew so well - as he murmured, "Could be the key... wouldn't want to pass up this chance," before he leaned in once more. This time his fingers just rested lightly at the base of her neck, holding her close but not forcing her to stay there, hoping she'd want to stay there al on her own. It might a little fast for a first date - but then, it wasn't, was it? And he didn't want her to feel like it was, not when she'd already waited so long. He was a fast learner, and if the information really was there... he'd find it. He was determined to try.

Somehow she couldn't believe that he was so agreeable to it but at the same time, it didn't surprise her. Kissing felt so good. And kissing him felt better than good. It might feel fast for him but it felt right to her, even with the confusing thoughts of his situation, their situation. Her fingers curled against the fabric of his shirt with a bit of a smile against his lips, feeling warm at the memory of his most recent dopey smile and the way his lips feel against hers.

If there was anything he'd learned - and retained - it was that you should never put off until tomorrow what you could do today. You might not get the chance if you procrastinated, and he wanted desperately to pick up the pieces of his life and fit them back together until they made a picture he could understand, a picture he wanted. And he knew he wanted Summer to be a part of that, even after only two days. Any girl who had waited for him for four years deserved his trust and yes, his love, and he knew it might take a little bit of time, but as his lips moved slowly against hers, he thought it might not be so difficult to love Summer Roberts at all, even if he had to fall for her all over again. It felt like she might have him head over heels in no time - and he had a feeling it might have been like that all along, since they were kids, no matter how long it had taken him to get up the courage to ask her out, or for her to drum up the courage to kiss him. He wanted to honor that courage, not bury it, and he was determined to make every second count as he hummed softly against her lips, his own forming a smile small enough that they didn't have to break the kiss, not until they were both ready.

Summer wanted to be that person, the one he trusted, the one he'd come to love even if just thinking of it that way was strange. But she wanted it, she wanted to be in his life forever, no matter what. And if she had to make him fall all over again, so be it. She'd pick up those pieces, give them to him, and help him put it back together, his life, whatever he wanted. Her mouth moved more firmly against his, moving closer to him, knowing full well that it was a little bad to be kissing a boy in her father's kitchen. But honestly, she didn't really care.

It might not be the most well-behaved of things, kissing her like this in her father's house, but right now he couldn't really be bothered to worry about behaving. This felt right, more right than just about anything else had, and he didn't want to let it go. Not yet, not when Summer seemed to think the same thing, moving closer to him as she kissed him right back. He could feel how important this was to her, and that made him all the more determined to try, to find that part of him she knew so well, because she was quickly becoming very, very important to him, too. He lost track of time, of where they were, until the kiss finally tapered off because he had to breath, panting a little, quietly, against her lips. "I sure know that's something I would have waited four years for."

She'd never gotten to kiss him like that before he left. Sure, that second kiss ever had gotten a little heated but it was still pretty chaste compared to this. This kiss made her feel something, made her whole body feel warm. And when he pulled back, she looked a little dazed as she tried to catch her breath, smiling at him, her own dopey smile. "Me too." Her fingers curled against his shoulders before she glanced at him. "I hope you don't think badly of me for kissing you on the first date." After all it was more like third date for her. Third date and four years of longing.

He laughed, breathlessly, shaking his head as his hand slid down her back a little, fingers just brushing over the fabric of her top. He knew this wasn't the first date for her, and even if it had been... "I think sometimes exceptions can be made... and this is one of those times. I think nothing but the best of you, I promise." He couldn't help but think of how this might have gone if he'd remembered, what their reunion might have been like if he'd turned around on that sidewalk and swept her into his arms. It suddenly made his heart ache, that he couldn't do that, that he couldn't have given her that when it was something he could sense she'd been waiting for, those four years. "Like I said... I might need a little rushing, right?"

His hand moving over her back like that made the blush on her cheek blossom more, her eyes meeting with his with happy amusement as he spoke. "I'm glad you do." He wasn't the only one who thought of how different it would've been if their reunion had been different. The past few days she spent crying in her room were filled with thoughts about nothing else. But this was okay too. It wasn't perfect but it was better than she could ever hope for. "True. A little rushing, like you said."

It wasn't the reunion he's sure he would have wanted to give her, no - but it was a reunion and he wanted to try to keep her from thinking about what ifs too much, because he knew just how they could spin out of control until you could barely think about anything else. And he wanted to make now special, for both of them, in whatever way he could, in whatever way this was going to be. Because now might not be what either of them had wished for, but they had now to make into whatever they wanted. And that seemed like it would definitely do.

"And besides... with motivation like that, I might get better really fast," he teased, leaving his hand where it was, though he didn't try to go any lower or touch any more of her, though she seemed all right with how he was touching her back now. "I admit, I didn't get anything like that in the hospital. I mean, the nurses were nice enough, but they sure weren't about to kiss me or cook me dinner."

She'd take what she got and what she got wasn't so bad at all, really. She was kissing him, they were on a date of sorts, and he was willing to spend time with her. That was more than she expected to get when she woke up this morning, all-cried out. Together they could do this on their own terms and figure things out on their own time.

She laughed at his teases, looking at him with an amused sort of expression. "Well, if they did that then I'd have to go find them and give them a piece of my mind." And a kick to the rear.
