03. I LOVE YOU, BUT... A bittersweet love confession. You know you love this person more than anything, but you're not sure you can give them what they need.
04. I DON'T TRUST YOU No matter how you feel about this person, you really can't trust them anymore.

21. HOW COULD YOU You don't understand how they could treat you like they have, do what they have done when you've done nothing but be good to them.

[ She laughs, but it's hushed and brief. Cold feet. No kidding, but she's trying to keep their best interests in mind. ]

We can't.

[A moment's pause. Then his hand slides off Selina's knee.]

And why can't we? Hmm? [He's on his feet now, circling around the desk as he moves to stand opposite her.] Because I'm not good enough? Or are you afraid of what the ex might think?

[ Her smile has since vanished, replaced by something thin lipped and serious. ]

I could write a book full of reasons. It's not that I don't... [ Her eyes follow him as he moves, and she loses whatever was on her tongue. ] Don't make this harder than it already is.

["Don't make this harder than it already is." His chest deflates at those words. Only weeks ago, she had been in his office saying those exact words just after he'd confessed. Just before they'd both given in. Turned this little game of theirs into something far more complicated altogether.

But weren't they past the point of cold feet? Given what they've been through thus far, why would Selina back out now?]

No, Selina. It is that you don't.

[ She sighs, closing her eyes and pressing her fingers to her temples. This had all went a lot more smoothly in her head, but then again, in her head she hadn't let herself think about silly things like emotions getting in the way.

This accusation makes her frown, and while it would likely be a lot easier to try and make this break if she let him think that, she finds herself unable to stand the thought. ]

It isn't like that.

[He takes a step towards her, arms crossed over his chest.]

Then tell me. What is it like?

[ It takes her a minute or two to answer him, gripping the edge of his desk tightly. ]

We've got a lot stacked against us. [ But that's not anything new or unusual for her, and it's never been something that's stopped her before. It's more than just that. ] I'm not what you need.

The odds have constantly been against us. That's how it's always been, hasn't it? Those are the lives we lead. But none of that should matter. [His hand rests against her cheek as he takes a look into her eyes.]

I... [He struggles. Even if he's expressed such sentiments before, it's difficult to get the words out now. Difficult to really display any sort of affection or love towards anything or anyone but himself.] I need you, Selina. Don't...

[Don't make him beg. Don't leave him.]

[ Stop him. Stop this while you still can.

But she doesn't stop him, just meets his gaze and holds it. She can feel her heart beat erratically in her chest, the way her skin heats at his touch- god damn it. Her resolve falters, and she tilts her head into his touch. ]

Eddie. [ She says his name in a breathy sigh. ] Shit...

[So long ago, he'd absolutely hated it whenever she called him "Eddie." "It's Edward," he used to try and correct her. But now... Now, he loved the sound of that name on her lips.

Yes, Selina's lips. Lips that he's decided to capture with his own in a heated kiss, hand still holding her steady by the cheek.]

[ She starts to protest, but finds herself surrendering quickly, readily. Her fingers curl into the front of his shirt, pulling him closer. It's not like this is the first time they've kissed, far from it, but there's a new desperation present. ]

[That desperation is definitely present in the way Edward sinks against her, his palm grazing along her cheek, fingers making their way into sleek black hair and burying themselves deep within it.

She'll likely be able to feel just how wildly his heart is pounding through her grip on his shirt.]
