[He wants to guess. He really, honestly does. It's actually rather surprising--why should he bother? Why not just keep teasing Riku, prodding at him and his skulking about in such a world of darkness, needle him to see just what kind of rise he can get out of the boy to gauge his intentions?

But the impulse to keep asking, to play and keep their little game going--it's strangely strong, and for the moment, it overrides his thoughts of just what he ought to be doing. Axel lets the laughter bubble up readily enough, smile turning more playful.]

It's no wonder I've got to provide all the entertainment around here, if you're always such a stick in the mud. But how about it--did you come here to spend a nice day on the beach with your old buddy, Axel? Or maybe you decided if we played tag and hide and seek long enough, I'd get sick of the chase and let you do whatever you want here on this world? Or maybe you were hoping we could make nice and I could take you to Roxas myself. Am I getting warmer~?

[ the moment he starts laughing is the moment Riku takes a big step back. he's never really heard a Nobody laugh before--out of happiness, anyway. out of mirth, yes, several times and he wished it wouldn't keep happening. he probably should be happy this encounter isn't outright harmful, but everything feels distinctly wrong.

he seems... happy to actually see him, and keep guessing. ]

I...

[ he can't even bring himself to respond, so surprised. but then, it's enough to sputter out; ]

I'm not a stick in the mud. [ he scowls a little--weak retort, he knows, even if it comes with real offense. honestly, most of those come with a bit of offense. ] Why would I even go to the beach with you?

[ he doesn't deny the last two. mostly because they're plausible. ]

If you're not a stick in the mud, then what are you? You haven't got the shining armor to be a heroic knight, and you don't have the white horse to be a dashing Prince Charming. You'd have to use your own two arms if you wanted to carry someone off into the sunset.

[Axel takes a step forward as Riku takes a step back--a smaller one, true, to leave Riku some more space, but he's not going to let him loose just yet. They've only just started talking, after all!]

I don't know, you seem like the sort to like the beach, to me. We could watch the sunset and eat ice cream, maybe go swimming--it'd be just like old times with your friends, right?

[It's really a shame that Riku seems so disenchanted with this game already. Isn't he the one who started it, after all? Who asked to keep playing? And he wonders why Axel is calling him a spoilsport.....]

[ You could say I'm the biggest nobody of all.

Riku shakes his head. he doesn't know why that phrase came to him, but there's no way he'd say that. talk about inappropriate. but he's tight lipped when it comes to labels, thinking it over. thinking of carrying someone into the sunset actually makes him stop moving back, his last foot stopping wetly into a puddle. he thinks of Kairi, as he held her with both arms when she was comatose. his heart lurches. it's painful. he is no knight or prince. of that, he knows. ]

I guess I'm just a tool to use.

[ he says it so confidently, one could almost guess that he likes it--even if the bitterness is quite heavy with it as well.

Riku is once again glad that he chose a blindfold, because he knows that as his chest clenches, his eyes are showing the pain that comes with remembering how things used to be--and how they can never and will never again be. ]

Not really.

Besides. I'm not going back there.

[ his eyes divert to the ground behind the cloth. ]

I know you have, though. Is that what you and your friends do?

A tool to use, huh? You sound like there's more to it than that..... Just what are you, then, a Keyblade? A sword?

[That edge to his voice..... It's like he's flaunting the fact out of pure defiant spite. If he has to be a tool, he'll be a good one, and he'll enjoy what he does, huh? He won't let anyone stop him. What a bold guy!

Axel can't resist tossing out a few more guesses still, even as he shrugs, gestures loose and lazy. It almost looks like this really is just a casual conversation to him--a chance to catch up with an acquaintance he hasn't see in a long while.]

Well, maybe not the swimming part..... but we do eat ice cream. Are you not going back because you can't, or you won't?

A shield.

[ probably the oddest answer as a 'tool', but honest regardless. ]

And won't. Stop asking questions.

[ he wonders what started that little exchange, anyway. ]

[The questions bubbling in the back of his mind die on his lips; the sudden shift in inclinations itself is enough to raise the hair on the back of his neck in private alarm. Even as mercurial as he is, his whims don't change so suddenly or completely without a very good reason--and he usually chooses to do so. This isn't natural; something is very wrong here.

His initial inclination is to ask just what the hell Riku thinks he's doing--but that too is something he finds himself instinctively shying away from, suddenly reluctant to voice anything like a question. It only confirms his suspicions, makes him want to dig his heels in and figure out just what's causing this. But then again.....

Well, the best way to hold onto what you have, in some cases, is to just go with the flow and keep an eye on where it takes you. His unease is cloaked in a breezy laugh and possibly infuriatingly amused smirk. He lets his hands settle on his hips, rocking back on his heels to give Riku a pointed inspection.]

A shield, then..... Interesting. I think I could see it! I really do. It suits you.

Damn shame about that deferred homecoming, though; there's not much use for a shield if it's not around to protect the people that need it. I'm sure you and yours will figure out something to get around that, though.

[ and it's unfortunate that Riku's clueless to his secluded distress. god knew that he thought Axel was acting weirdly--but he only thought that it was meant to trip him up. one could never be too careful when it came to the Organization. and Axel himself was an anomaly, like Roxas.

that smirk certain serves its purpose; his blood finds itself boiling. his arms cross over his chest, as if that itself raised a shield against Axel's examination. ]

Well, if you weren't the only shield, you probably wouldn't need to be so defensive about it. I mean, we all know Sora's not one.

[His grin only widens a little at the pun, and the teasing riiiiiight~? of encouragement, though unspoken, is implied readily enough in his arched eyebrows and the playful gleam in his eyes. Even if this is unnatural, this is actually kind of fun.....

.......Wait.......

This is fun. He's enjoying himself. Chatting with Riku like this, dancing around these seemingly arbitrary mental barriers he's found imposed on himself--it's an interesting challenge, he's actually starting to like it. Past the confusion and concern. it--it feels....... good.......? He feels good.

What the hell is going on, here?]

[ ... and yet, surprisingly, the pun is the only thing that breaks through Riku's iciness, and ... despite all restrictions...

Riku laughs, and it's not mirthful or bitter. he tilts his head down and shakes his head slightly. ]

Yeah, well, you never know.

[Heh. So he really can make light of himself after all, huh? Good for him, it's about time he showed it. Axel strolls closer, smile almost whimsical.]

Yeah, hard to say. I guess there's always the possibility your little lady friend is a shield too, but I'm not so sure about that one..... After all, there's no point in one shield protecting another.

[ ah--no, too close.

Riku realizes that when Axel stops walking and he starts quickly backing up again. ]

Like I said before, you'd be surprised.

[ after all, Kairi had been willing to protect Sora... Riku was a blatant shield, but that didn't count Kairi out. ]

What would that make you?

Maybe I would be--but then, I think I might have to see these things to believe them.

[Axel follows, though not very quickly; the pursuit is lazy, almost like..... almost like he just wants to get closer, and doesn't care about actually catching or cornering him at all.]

Me? I don't know..... I'd say I'm a spark. Maybe not very impressive to a big shield like you, but I'm curious anyway. What do you think I am?

[ his voice is cool, but distinctly sharp--a dagger could mean so many things, but it's usually used for killing. stabbing.

Pretty fitting, I'd say.

[It should hurt, he thinks. It should be a stinging blow to his pride and integrity, to be considered nothing more than a murderous instrument of betrayal. It's never been something he wanted to be. But he laughs again at Riku's certainty, at the utter lack of hesitation to condemn him so completely--what use does anyone ever consider a dagger, killing aside?

A sardonically pleased smile lights up his face, and his eyes gleam as he angles closer, pressing to close the distance and see just what he can figure out from the almost inevitable rebuff. After all, just because he doesn't want to be one doesn't mean that he can or should deny what he's done.]

Not bad! I guess it's fitting enough, I'll take it.

Fitting enough, huh.

[ but when put into perspective, Riku can see him as a spark, too. after all, you could call Castle Oblivion a stack of dry paper, and Axel was the combustion that set it all ablaze. ]

Maybe a flint dagger. You still have a spark.

Yeah, fitting enough. But I like that idea even better--a flint dagger, that suits me just fine. Clever guy, aren't you?

[Axel moves to carelessly drape an arm over Riku's shoulders, evidently feeling a little companionable in the midst of their friendly banter; weighing the sensations against the distance, he's certain beyond a doubt now that something is making him more comfortable the closer he gets.]

[ that weight is something Riku's never really felt before. he's way, way too confused, and when he tries to get a good look at Axel's face, he's too close, even if he's not right in his bubble. he can see the wisps of red hair on the sides of his head, the color of his tattoo, and he can smell leather that's cleanly broken in. ... and, the smell of smoke?

geez, he's too close. but he's sort of warm. ]

You sound surprised.

[Now this? This feels much better. There's no logical reason it should, but it does. He's actually rather tempted to just cozy up and enjoy the strange sensation of something like contentment; no doubt Riku's expression would be priceless. For the moment, though, he simply settles his arm more comfortably around him instead, toying with a few locks of pale hair.]

What's the matter? You keep saying I would be surprised, I should be surprised--shouldn't that be what you want?

You shouldn't be surprised about me being smart, though.

I've avoided you guys for a while, no one would be able to do that without being smart--and what are you doing with my hair.

[ with such a weight on his shoulders, Riku doesn't feel like he can move, but he can't just shove Axel off of him when he's exhibiting such weird signs... ]

[The offered explanation is nonchalant, almost playfully innocent, but Axel makes no effort to stop.]

There are different kinds of smart, you know. Coming up with a knife like that is creative, but hiding takes being sneaky.

Hiding takes knowing where the enemy is.

... stop, you're going to make my hair get split ends.

[ oh, excuse him, that sounded way less girlish in his head. ]

I never said it didn't, did I?

[Axel laughs quietly, almost fondly, but he obligingly stops the petting; his fingers fall still and curl loosely against Riku's neck instead, still buried in his hair.]

[ there's a shiver with those fingers against his warm neck, pulse. his spine sticks straight, his shoulders stiffen, and the red is an obvious glow on his face despite his blank expression. ]

What's with you? Tell me what's wrong with you.

[Axel's smirk only widens in response, smoothing his fingers down the curve of Riku's neck in a light caress; the sparkle of mischief in his eyes helps him dig his heels in to counter the urge to just spill it all right away, and at least take a moment of silence to organize the sentiment into a more appropriately flippant response. Even so, the thrill of pleasure once he does start to speak is undeniable, and Axel sidles closer almost without thinking about it.]

What, so now it's wrong for me to do what you say? I thought you'd be happy I'm feeling so generous today.
