[Moving to lean against the counter, Spike glances around curiously.] Just a hundred?

A couple hundred. The rest are...dispersed. Italy, England, Cleveland, et cetera and so on and so forth.

[ some trepidation. ]

[He just nods, letting that soak in. He'll make with the questions in a bit. For now there's ..] Got any Earl Grey?

[ she pulls a face. earl grey? bleh. double bleh. give her something with whipped cream and java and caramel and cinnamon over that any day. ]

Sometimes, huh. [But he only lifts an eyebrow, looking back down at his nails.] I'll take whatever you're having then.

But you can mock my tea all you want, is that it? [It's not like he actually cares one way or the other, but he's doing his best to inject all the hipster offense he can, crossing his arms across his chest and everything.]

[ a nod and a sigh. she takes his offense and somehow manages to take offense at it. go figure. buffy shoulders her way into a small spare kitchen because somehow, this castle has that. castles, man. not even once. ]

[He nudges in after her, almost making a comment about it. But somehow he figured kitchen mocking went with beverage mocking.] How about some cocoa, with those bitty marshmallows in. I fancy those.

What? Do I look like I take orders? Is there something about this outfit that screams waitress?

[ she reaches for a pair of mugs before shooting over her shoulder: ] Don't answer that.

Well, now that you mention it... [But he knows better than to finish his sentence, wondering if he's already earned himself some crazy mochaccino drink.]

[ each mug lands heavily on the counter. punctuating her horror. ]

Was going to say, that it suits you. Not being a waitress, but the colors and whatnot. [gestures...vaguely, arching an eyebrow. there, olive branch officially extended. Willow would be proud or something.]

Gee, thanks.

[ she tries to commit to the steel and finds herself coming short; buffy busies herself with the drink preparations. swallowing all that failed indignation. ]

Always did have a way with words. Some even called me a poet once upon a time. [Half trying to catch her eye... half trying to hide himself.]

[ she straightens her arms and locks her elbows as she leans back against the shallow counter. waiting for the coffee maker to do its magic. ] Because I dimly recall studying poetry before I had to stage a serious intervention on my college life and you do not own entirely enough cravats to be a poet, Spike.

[ lilting. light. spike has a way with words that she knows she ought not to deny but buffy feels more comfortable taking potshots than giving him any ground.

the woman takes a long time to warm up. in that way, she's a little like the castle she now inhabits. ]

Believe what you like, Slayer. [A definite smile there. And some definite eye contact. He'll just have to do the warming up for her, which ought to be ironic since he is all circulationless and stuff.]

[ spike's relative readiness to be more hot-blooded than herself -- outside of battle -- is an irony not lost on her back then and certainly not lost on her now; she clams up, shakes her head, and turns away from that eye contact. it burns just a little too brightly.

so she looks to preoccupy herself and the queen of hot and cold hisses quietly as she scalds the edge of her hand on the heated-up coffee maker. the breathed curse is more cathartic than genuine. it isn't as though she's actually burned. the skin shows a smudge of redness. that's all. ]

O-of course...you probably did have one. Them. Ample amounts of them. Back...then. [ a hard swallow. she glances at him now and then from the corner of her vision. ] Cravats.

[He chuckles easily, warmly. Though just under the surface he's cracking up. And if she doesn't offer up something well. He's just going to have to keep being sickeningly nice until they're both nauseous. He's already resigned himself to the fate.]

And jackets made of velveteen, so what's your point. [Slowly, and with the utmost care, he takes her hand. Not without some trepidation, but he keeps the contact as light as he can possibly manage, breath catching stupidly as he draws his thumb over her incidental and quickly disappearing burn.]

[ there is, of course, the initial tug -- startled and spooked; every bit like a jackrabbit trying to bound instantly away. there are things about spike that still leave her hella disquieted and while his touch is certainly not altogether welcome, it hasn't yet broached welcome either. ]

My point is -- in a roundabout kind of way -- you're doubly disqualified from commenting on my outfits. Waitressy or not. Colourful or not. Because you had velveteen and cravats and now you look like...like...[ she stammers as she loses verbal control at just around the same point she resigns her hand to his care. ]
