Hey. [He ducks his head until he can catch her eyes and hold them there, his hand tightening imperceptibly. Maybe.] It's good to see you, Buffy.

Y-you too, Spike. I mean -- I mean there's a certain sort of mutuality to that particular feeling. [ another sigh. another breath -- this time sucked in past her teeth and she feels a muscle twitch along her jaw.

her fingers flex under his. strong but not strictly protesting. biding her time. ]

[Spike nods, glad to hear the words even if the uncertainty still hurts. He anticipated it at least, which doesn't make it hurt any less but rather dulls to a constant ache in his chest cavity.] Buffy, I... [He means to say something else, but his expression softens and for the first time he lets it all crumble. Lets her see just how broken up he is; how lost. But he doesn't dare let go for fear of being pushed away entirely.]

I don't expect anything... just seeing you, it's. [Enough is wrong, and anything else sounds forced, so he lets it drop, breathing slowly out through his nose.] Coffee's ready.

[And as if it's the hardest thing he's ever done, several seconds later, his fingers open up to free hers, that raw expression once again clearly splayed across his face.]

[ her brows knit. watching that pain register on his face inspires a new pain in her. heart-crushing mercy seizes her chest and -- once again -- she seems to sputter and spin her wheels. run on the spot. can't go forward and can't go back. ]

It's...[ she is about to finish the sentence for him when the moment cracks and flakes away.

coffee's ready. the slayer turns rapidly away and pours the drinks too quickly. too rigidly. ] Go on. Grab a seat. I'll bring these over.

[He looks as if he's about to protest, but all that happens is a brief yet curt nod as he slides stiffly into a chair.]

Ta. [softly.] Awfully hospitable of you.

What good's a castle -- [ she mumbles a little too forcefully as she slides one mug towards him and sits opposite ] -- if you don't get to play the perfect host, huh?

Perfect's a pretty tall order. [some brief eye-narrowing as both palms hug his cup idly.] Even for you.

Well -- you know what they say about perfect, right? And about how to make it?
