[The subtle, physical indication of distance is enough to make Utena's hand fall to her side. She won't be reaching out again for a while.]

I'd like that. [The Duels loom in the back of her mind, the reminder of her promise, but she can spare some time for Mami. She wants to spend time with Mami, and that's the problem.

She follows Mami inside the apartment, and even her customary stretching has stopped for now. Every motion she makes is subdued, diminished.] How...[How have you been? she thinks to ask, but it's a question she knows the answer to already.] How have you been holding up?

[It makes sense that Mami would have heard the announcement - everyone did. And Utena wonders if she's the only one of Mami's friends who will be leaving. She imagines that would be easier, but she doubts it.]

Despite how late it was, Souji had managed to forget to eat dinner. What point was there to cooking something if he was the only one there to eat? Yosuke seemed all too eager to simply drop off the food and go, and for a long moment Souji waged a mental war with himself. Should he let his friend leave with a simple nod and a thank you for thinking of him? Or should he invite him in to share, possibly even to share more than just the food Yosuke had brought?

Souji stood there, staring, for a long moment. It was probably unnerving. Yosuke was rambling and making a face and Souji knew that he wouldn't be good company, he knew that even if he invited Yosuke in, he was probably not going to enjoy himself one bit. They hadn't hung out alone in so long - months - and a lot had changed.

Souji found himself staring at the floor, gaze having slowly dropped from Yosuke's face.

"I don't mind you staying," he said eventually. "But... if you want to go..." He'd let him go.

[In contrast, Utena is bristling with an angry, pent-up energy. The offer the Queen had made is so terrible that she can scarcely comprehend it. It's nothing more than a cruel, sadistic joke. She'd known the Queen was selfish, perhaps a little mad, but not this awful.

There is a part of her that knows why Mami is bringing up this topic, but she refuses to acknowledge it, won't do so until the message becomes crystal clear.]

This whole time, the Queen has been encouraging us to develop feelings for each other, right? She thought that if she brought enough of us here, and tweaked the circumstances, everyone would find their special person. No one would have to be alone.

[A pause as she thinks back, reflects on her long time spent in the Gardens and how it's changed her. Slowly, with great difficulty and pain, but worth it in the end.]

I think that's what this is - a test of love. The question of just how far one is willing to go for the sake of the person they care about the most.

[What's he supposed to say to that? It's not like he's going to argue that he's a wonderful person. For one thing, he doesn't think that's true. For another, what would be the point? He already knew Reno felt that way. He's not going to try to change his mind, and he doesn't care to try.] Didn't say it did.

[The silence stretches for an uncomfortable moment. Then Mami's shoulders heave in a small, tired shrug and she gestures to the living room table - an invitation for Utena to take a seat, delivered without meeting her gaze.] About as well as I always do, I suppose.

Mami remains calm as she meets that stare of horror, the serenity genuine rather than a thin veneer over something cold and unnatural and calloused. It's not defeat, the broken acceptance of the weary. The look on her own face in response to the disbelieving question is content, at peace with herself and her choice.
