[ Another small smile. She likes that, even just the idea of it; the anticipation created when he changes the way the game is played, denies her in the way so few people can. It's what fascinates her. She has all the pieces of his mystery but there's always an unexpected twist. ]

[ Still, something catches her attention, and she's close again. Perfume, today, a very subtle scent of sandalwood, or perhaps there's just something in her soap. ]

[That's a lie, of course. If he did know, he'd probably be asking anyway. As it is, he's still not certain what she means by 'dinner'. Or...anything else about her, actually.

He inhales her perfume. He's done a study of perfumes and their origins, it's on the website, but hers is foreign. Alien. Utterly untraceable. It might even be classified as 'intoxicating']

Pay attention. There are two reasons to eat: to sate hunger, and for the pleasure of the food. Dinner, however, dinner is not simply a way to spend time with someone, but to invite them to share in satiation and pleasure. Mutual pleasure being, of course, greater than the sum of it's parts.

[ The manner in which she speaks is a very subtle mockery of Sherlock when he solves a case. ]

I'm not going to tell you to have dinner with me, Mr. Holmes, because then you'd have to obey me. But I'm not going to ask, either.

[ Irene doesn't tend to ask for things. ]

[his voice is low, and just a shade around vulnerable, because he's not really certain of the answer to this question. There aren't a lot of questions that he asks that he really doesn't know the answer to.]

[ She reaches for his hand, wanting to touch some part of him, find intimacy in a simple gesture. She slides her hand slowly over his wrist, nails grazing his pulse-point and down to his palm. ]

I'm not sure it's something I can describe. Perhaps it's something you'd simply have to ... experience.

[he glances downwards at his wrist where she's touching him, but doesn't pull away, he looks back at her, catching eye contact again.]

I've had dinner on my own before.

[He's just being difficult at this point. He knows very well that isn't what she's referring to.]

[ She flicks an eyebrow up, her smile going with it, somewhere between mischievous and smug. ]

I think I'd like to see that.

Hasn't everyone?

[There's something about that smile that just does something to Sherlock, something he might possibly understand in someone else, but is incapable of understanding in himself. His heartrate rises, and he gets the strangest desire to actually taste that smile.

Idiotic, really. He won't allow himself to do much more than return her smile with a very slight one of his own.]
