It had been fault, he had warned him. Don't talk about Guinevere. Don't mention her in his presence, and the warning had been stern. It wasn't his fault that Merlin had spoken out of turn, had ignored his warnings, had done so when he had slept least and when his patience and temper were shortest.
It had been all so very complicated.
So he waits a minute before responding, though he isn't obligated to let Merlin in at all.]
Come in, Merlin.
We'll get there in the end ... 8|
[ There will, Merlin muses, always be elements of his father rooted deep within Arthur, at least until he himself realizes the true potential of what he means to Albion. For all he's grown wiser over the years he's still Arthur, still a hopeless prat, and he still has a lot to learn about the world he lives in and the people who live in it. Merlin can't judge him too harshly despite having found himself on the receiving end of his harsh looks (and now harsh fists) one too many times.
He pushes the door open slowly, carefully, and scans his chambers until he spots Arthur at the far end of the room by his desk. He doesn't look happy. Neither one of them looks particularly happy, actually, and he closes the door behind himself before crossing the room to lean against one of those tall bedposts. ]
I know that I'm just Merlin. [ He pauses, taking a breath. ] I know that I'm not an adviser, or a noble, or anyone even remotely worthy of calling myself your friend, but ...
[ Merlin's open gaze is boring into the back of Arthur's head—he doesn't keep his eyes respectfully low, nor does he nitpick around censored subjects. He just ... talks. ]
Sometimes that's a good thing. Sometimes, people need a nobody to talk to. Even princes. Even kings.
[ He takes a step closer, but remains a good few arm-lengths away. ]
Talk to me, Arthur. If you keep suffering and bottling it up like this then next time I might end up with more than a black eye. [ Perhaps not the best way to attempt to lighten the mood, but hey. He's trying. ]

So he listens, and not long after Merlin's finishes, he responds just the barest glance over his shoulder, more at the floor than at his friend.]
I apologize for striking you, Merlin, You've done more than enough to garner more respect from me than that. Now get out.

[ Merlin considers listening to Arthur, he really does. He considers doing as he's told, letting it go, giving him some space for the night so that they'll never have to talk about it again. It'd certainly be the easier option, and perhaps it would be better for Arthur in the short term, which encourages a moment's hesitation in itself. All Merlin has ever wanted is what's best for his master, after all ... ]
... Um. I— [ He pauses, a hand moving up to rub at the nape of his neck. He fiddles with a few curls of black hair in an attempt to buy himself a few more seconds; ] No.
[ There. That wasn't so hard, was it? ]
No. [ And again! ] I'm ... not going to leave. Not yet. Don't get me wrong, I accept your apology, but ... [ He takes a step forwards, just about as certain as he is uncertain. ] I think you need to be with someone. And I want to be here for you.

I'm fine, I said get out.

[ He looks at him for a long, hard moment, before clapping his hands together and shaking his head. Fine. If he's going to be difficult ... ]
I'm afraid I can't possibly do that. Your suite is in a terrible state, after all, and I wouldn't be able to call myself your manservant with pride if I were to leave it in such a mess. You just carry on doing whatever you're doing.
[ He crosses the room to the gently crackling fireplace and kneels to begin sweeping up the ashes. ]
You won't even know I'm here, Sire.

Fine, but not a word. I've got plans to look over.

[ Merlin mimes placing a padlock over his lips before tossing the invisible key into the fire, and sends a sheepish thumbs-up Arthur's way before going back to his sweeping. In truth there's not all that much that needs to be done to his chambers—Arthur's desk is a mess, but isn't it always—and he chews on his lower lip for a moment before swivelling to reach for the poker. A fire can never be too well tended, can it?
Spoiler: it can. In a wonderful display of clumsiness Merlin manages to knock over the old iron rack that holds all the utensils together for easy access, sending them clattering to the stone floor in an outrageous din. He winces a little, then glances towards Arthur, before mouthing 'SORRY' across the room.
... This really isn't going the way he planned. Trust Arthur to make it difficult for him. ]

Is there nothing that you're competent at, Merlin?
no subject
Probably not, no.
[ And then he pauses to think for a moment. ]
Actually, I'm pretty good at being incompetent, if that counts? [ His expression is bright and hopeful, perhaps too bright and hopeful considering their topic of discussion. He doesn't waste any more time in righting the fireside tools, though, and he manages not to cause any more noisy disasters while he's at it. ]
Do you ... [ Small talk. Small. Talk. So much for being quiet, right? ] Do you need any help with the plans?
