[Hey Masaru! Enjoying that epilogue-era run around the digital world? Well hope you weren't enjoying being the only human around because Touma's somehow dropped in for a visit and to catch up on the gossip.]

...I got the letter two days ago. [Yep, talking about dat Nobel Prize.] I'll be officially presented with the medal and the diploma in Stockholm this time next week. I'm not expecting you to take time out of your busy schedule [keeping the peace] to attend, but I just wanted to let you know about it.

[You'd think the world's youngest Nobel Prize winner would be a bit happier about this.]

[Masaru, unlike his clean cut old friend, looks like someone whose been spending years living hand to mouth in a land with very little concept of civilivation. He's dirty (and probably doesn't smell that great, considering digimon don't need soap and the water here only works in any logical way about 60% of the time) and lean, even more rough around the edges then he was as a kid and damn he could use a haircut. Sure, the digimon treat him as an honored guest in every home he comes to- as much on his own merits as his father's, now, but their homes aren't meant for human comfort and he could never bring himself to stay long an someone else's hospitality.

But regardless, unlike the rather unhappy looking Touma, Masaru is vibrant now in a way he only was when fighting as a kid. Only now tempered and not nearly as manic. Someone finally started growing up.]

Heh, congrats. Guess your big brain was finally good for something. You sure as hell don't look too excited about it though.

[Touma just accepts Masaru's congratulations with a smile. Arranging the digital dive for this visit had been well worth it, not only for those words he'd been hearing a lot lately (though certainly no one had teased him about it like this), but also to see how his old friend had matured. And apparently gotten a bit sharper, though it's more just that in the digital world, and with one of his best friends, Touma feels freer to let his guard down.]

I am! To have much of my life's work recognized by the greater medical community... [There's pride in this smile: It's the icing on the cake that was curing Relena, seeing his little sister walk and run around as healthy as any girl. But if even Masaru can tell he's not entirely happy about it...

[Actually, Touma has only the most stupid, embarrassing worry, which is why he hasn't brought it up to anyone. But if he doesn't mention it to someone, he's almost worried it may really happen. And who's Masaru going to tell, the digimon?]

I'm just slightly concerned [understatement of the year] about the ceremony.

[He just stares at him for a moment, and more mature or not no one will ever say Daimon Masaru has ever had ANYTHING resembling tact]

Touma Norstein has stage fright?!

[Touma folds his arms and looks away. At least he's not laughing...yet.]

I can't say it's something I'm proud of.

[Though it's a close thing. Masaru's eyes are all squinty from holding the laughter in, and it kinda squeaks out a bit in his voice]

How the hell can you be scared of a buncha... doctors and scientists and fancy pants guys?

It's not just the scientists I'm worried about! [Argh, now he's blushing.] The ceremony will be broadcast live all over the world; everyone will watching the youngest Nobel Prize winner...

What if I trip on stage? [It's this in particular that he's irrationally, irrevocably scared about. He sounds just as bitter as he imagines the mockery will be:] The boy who made his sister able to walk, unable to walk properly himself...

[He pictures THAT image, and finally the laughter escapes in one harsh bark, making Agumon, who was playing with some nearby Botamon, look up to make sure they were okay before going back to his business. Masaru covers his mouth and muffles the rest of the snickers until they calm]

S-sorry...

[Then, in a much more serious but still warm tone:]

Everyone in the world was watching us when Yggdrasil was attacking too... and you didn't stumble even once, right?

[Touma shoots Masaru a death glare the second he laughs, and continues to do so until he apologizes. Damnit, he knew Masaru would laugh...

[Yet at the same time, he'd also known Masaru would have his back. So his words earn some honest consideration, even if Touma doesn't think the two situations are comparable.]

I didn't have time to think about it, then. It was all go, doing what we had to, not these scripted formalities steeped in years of tradition.

[He does appreciate the vote of confidence, though, and he looks somewhat more relaxed for it.]

[Yet for Masaru there isn't and never was any difference. He'd react to a battle against an alien programming god and a formal life setting affair with the same instinctual thoughtlessness and zeal. His brow wrinkles and he flops back against the rock he was half leaning against]

[Touma chuckles, because who exactly does Masaru think he's talking to here?]
