It was a strange feeling, and it was one Sherlock Holmes did not like. He never felt like he did not know his own mind, never heard the white noise. There were always a hundred trains of thought constantly.

As much as he had missed the thrill of danger, John never failed to recognized it for what it really was. Danger. The more he put himself in the more his lifespan shortened. John Watson rather liked living. And through some artful twisting of his thoughts, John convinced himself this was a change for the better, for his own safety and Sherlock's. He'd been doing just fine before John turned up and he could keep doing just that. John would still like to see him, but do things normal friends did. Have a kip down to the pub, watch crap movies and eat crap food.

One might think he simply became distracted with some new thought, something that rendered the argument pointless in his mind. Some silent rambling, perhaps. It was common enough. He would interrupt speech with thought and let the rest hang, oblivious or uncaring.
