[ she is not to open doors. she is queen now, and she is to call for a servant or to turn away the visitor. she should be acting very grand and important, perhaps the way morgana had once been, all aloof, cutting smiles and elegant turns of the head.

but gwen is not good at being anything other what she is, which is why she crosses the room to pull the door open herself. she expects it to be the maids, perhaps, or one of the knights with a message from arthur. merlin, though, gwen had not expected. her face creases with concern immediately at the sight of him--he looks exhausted, like he's not slept in ages. ]

Merlin! Please, come in. You could have just come in. You know these chambers as well as anyone, after all.

[ after all, merlin had attended to arthur for so long, before gwen herself had taken up residence here. she takes him gently by the wrist, pulling him in and shutting the door securely behind him. ]

Is everything alright?

[ A thin smile tries to wriggle its way onto his lips, it really does, but Merlin gives up after a few moments of trying and moves to lean against the door. Gwen's kind words and sweet voice are already easing down his defenses (of which there are now, out of necessity, too many than is entirely healthy), but even beneath the dark cloud hovering over him he has enough common sense to keep the majority of them in tact. ]

[ But he's answering his rehearsed answers all over again, isn't he? When he came to Gwen to speak from the heart. He's grown so used to glossing over, brushing off, weaving thin white lies to protect those he loves from the true nature of what he is, and he's long since accepted that his seemingly dim-witted nonchalance has become an increasingly large part of who people believe him to be.

[ whatever is wrong, it must very bad for merlin to speak so candidly about leaving. in all her years knowing him, she has never once heard him entertain thoughts of abandoning his duties. ]

Merlin, surely there is something else that can be done. I shall speak to Arthur, and he shall decrease your duties.
