[Okay, extremely worrying. He doesn't even say anything to that, just turns towards the kitchen and starts up the water and gets everything else ready.]

...Is Marco alright?

[Follows along and then shakes his head numbly. No words yet, but even coming to Japan is a sign of trust.]

[He's glad Marco came at all, yes, but he's trying to think what this could be. In the end he decides his speculating isn't helping, so he brings the tea and cups over to the table, pouring it there.

He passes Marco's cup over by hand.]

[Takes the cup and stares into it briefly before taking a sip.]

When you fought America... did you ever feel overwhelmed?

...Overwhelmed? [He sips his own cup slowly before setting it down and watching Marco with a bit of concern.]

With how my confidence was... Only at the very end.

[Sets his cup down too and wraps his arms around Japan's waist in a hug, his head hidden against Japan's chest.]

Ahhh you're so strong Bushido, I should have known.

[He fidgets a little, clearly there's a lot more to say, but the words aren't there.]

[He blinks but hesitantly moves his arms to hold Marco there, eventually setting a hand on the back of his head.]

Marco, please tell me what is preying on your mind.

[He stills and tries to speak, but still nothing. Didn't he promise Japan he'd try though? Their daily tea time wasn't just for Japan to talk.]

I'm not stronger than Thatch. Only more experienced than Ace... and certainly not stronger than my Pops. How can I--? [Turns into a phoenix. Even saying that much out loud seems too much.]

Marco...

[He holds him in that form and moves to sit somewhere.]

I believe Marco knows more of me than anyone else. I would like to believe that I know more of Marco than anyone, as well, but this is something that should continue to grow, isn't it? This "trust?"

If it takes time, that is fine, but please speak your thoughts.

[Switches back to human to give him a quick kiss.]

Ah... I'm afraid. I'm not as strong as Ace and my Pops... because it's not about being able to even embrace my own death. I have to stay strong for my brothers and... I don't know that I can. Blackbeard knows everything about us, all our weaknesses, everything about Pops' territory... playing him against the marines can only last so long. They believed he wasn't going to betray them once, if they're that stupid, he'll fool them again. I'm scared. I hate it...

Fear is a frustrating thing, I believe.

[He stays close to Marco, raising a hand to the side of his face to try and comfort him.]

But the Marco I know will stay strong. He will grow stronger, as well.

I'm not sure that I can. I can try to learn more, but it seems like this is as strong as I get... worse. That all my strengths will be stolen one by one till all I have left is determination.

Marco must realize that is not true at all!

[fierybluebird]

Isn't it? [Clenches a fist.] Pops was the strongest man in the world, and the smartest I've ever known. He was protecting us and now I have to try to step up to that.

And if I can't... I lose my family. Everything.

What is this "if?" What is it that Marco has told me so many times?

[He watches him worriedly.]

I cannot fight wars, or be so strong to travel and help Marco, but I would like to believe I will be there for him in any way that I can. Perhaps subtly... [He leans closer and sort of nuzzles by his ear.] You will not lose your family. Please be sure not to lose yourself. Marco can do this.

[Leans into the gentle nuzzles and grabs hold of Japan's hand. Confidence, he has, but it can't outweigh the fear. Can it?]

I'm debating a big gamble, same as Shanks made... and I don't like it. Putting all that on his shoulders... [Squeezes Japan's hand softly.]

[He holds onto that hand.]

Fear is not something that will just go away. Perhaps Marco is not used to it, but... [A small kiss] Despite it, things will be alright in the end. I am sure of it.

Then what do I do? Learn to live like this? Make friends with the nightmares? How do I even find peace?

I do believe that is something for Marco to find himself. "Peace"...

[He takes a hand and places it over where he's sure Marco's heart is close to.]

But Marco should continue on with his usual confidence. For the sake of his family... and himself. And those gone, as well.

[Bites his own lower lip and buries his head into his arms on Japan's lap.]

I don't have another choice.

Would you choose something else? [He pets the back of his head and neck, trying to be soothing]

[Shakes his head and relaxes into the pets.] Ah you're right... I would choose this too I suppose. [Which does cheer him up.]

Isn't that so? [He leans in just a bit for a soft kiss to the back of Marco's head.]

This is what Marco would choose. So I believe he will do well.
