[It was so natural to him that she be there. That she lived within these walls even when she had never truly existed there before. Not in her world.

His arm came up instinctively to go lay across the back of the couch where she sat, his eyes never leaving his book. There was no need to question it, no reason to. She belonged there-- at least in his mind.]

Shall I read to you then? [He asked with a teasing smile. A smile that was not for her and entirely for her at the same time.]

Depends on what you're reading. [Her voice is quiet as she says it, although it's not like it really matters what book he has in his hands, the fact that he's offering to read to her is tempting enough because of how completely unfamiliar the idea is. She'd like to pretend to be the girl he reads to for a while, maybe. Just someone not herself.

She reaches out to press on the corner of the book until she can read a few lines for herself. None of it sticks.]

Can I tell you something?

[perspicacity]

[His eyes move from the pages to her.]

Certainly.

[The books closes, but he keeps a finger in place at his spot for now. ]

[Immediately she wants to put up her mental walls, block him from seeing her thoughts as she tries to sort through how to say this, but she can't bring herself to do it.]

I love you. You know that, right? I think it would be impossible not to love you, Charles. [Her eyes start to blur as they well with tears, but she blinks them away, squeezes her eyes shut and hides her face against his sleeve to keep it that way.] You're a great friend, that's all. A great person. [And she's not. But maybe she can just leave it at that.]

[He looks at her with renewed uncertainty. This- it wasn't what he had expected to hear and now that he had he felt a sudden and terribly sharp pang of worry.]

Raven...thank you. It means a lot-- but, is something wrong? Raven, please look at me.
[He turned more towards her, touching his hand gently to her hair as she buried close. He resisted peering into her mind even to sooth his own fears, but instead waited for her to speak.]
