meme #007 | classic word association ( murder: employment )

Word Association is a common word game involving an exchange of words that are associated together. The game is based on the noun phrase word association, meaning "stimulation of an associative pattern by a word" or "the connection and production of other words in response to a given word, done spontaneously as a game, creative technique, or in a psychiatric evaluation."

[ the world would be an easier place to navigate if men had no hearts and no will. no wants. no anything. fire burns, and passion is the worst fire.

either way — here's a reply that needs no words at all: a crumpled pack of cigarettes, a lighter, and a held-out hand. he doesn't smoke; there's no dependence, no habit-forming attraction to nicotine. he just likes the taste of smoke on his mouth, but not the feel of it in his lungs.

[ bell doesn't smoke — he's tried it and decided that it isn't for him. sometimes it's useful to, though — ops, particularly undercover ones, or to forge some kind of connection. it's a small thing, but it can be a shared trait. seemingly shared.

so he takes the offer rather than rejecting it.

[ barsad flicks the lighter - his own stick already held on the corner of his mouth, and lit - and holds it out to the other. it's not the universal sign of commiseration, but it does well enough for pleasant camaraderie.

punching each other's faces is still better bonding, on the other hand, but this is not a place nor time for that. ]

[ leaning in to light the cigarette. he prefers this to punching. vastly prefers it, even — and punching each other's faces might be a good outlet but he'd react quite differently to that.

for example by booking you for assaulting a cop but that's neither here nor there.

inclining his head in acknowledgment and inhaling.

[ o sweet companionable silence - a friend who only visits at the rarest of times, who leaves behind the cool feeling of early summer mornings. warm, touch-cold; like the flavor of smoke on the tongue. it's not ash, not yet, and barsad could even taste the mint of the filter paper if he tried a little harder.

[ bell does not like this league at all. good thing that he doesn't know about it.

but he figured barsad is all right. kind of messed up, but all right, and so when it starts raining he drops his cigarette and nods into the direction of a bar.
