[ gone now but it lingers formatively. he keeps his answer wholly true but injects levity into his tone, as if closing the book on the topic. he knows just how to do it now, has practiced on other women. ]

[ she's seen and felt the things erika was subjected to, is reminded of it at times when she closes her eyes. the spectres of that brittle world haunt charlotte sometimes when she draws away the veil of her own sheltered world. it's merely a secondhand empathy that, for she doesn't have the scars to show for those experiences. only the memories stolen by accident from a woman wrought with pain in the ocean. ]

[ she drops her gaze away from him as she speaks. it's not so much a correction as it is a thought on the matter, mind drifting for a moment to the absent sister. erika and james are very different from other people she has met in her life, the world marking them much deeper than the numbers on their arm. ]

[ it is that, but he holds that as they experienced it, there was no cause, no real reason but blind obedience, hatred and diversion. meaning is found later, where thoughts can be calmed and sorted into strokes, and all the irrelevant pain tumbles dry from the canvas. ]

[ and that's the marked difference, she thinks, between james and his sister. where erika let those experiences define every aspect of her, he doesn't appear to have embraced it in such a damaging manner. she's destined for greatness and charlotte is convinced erika will achieve it with a bit of catharsis. ]

[ she does not agree with any of erika's methods, but it's going to take more than just disagreement on the fundamentals to change the landscape of such a stubborn (and revolutionary) mind. ]

[ admittedly he doesn't know how to help erika see things any other way. part of him is concerned their relationship will crumble away like all the others, that blood won't be enough -- and the rest of him is convinced it has to be. not enough to change her mind or calm her rage but enough to keep them connected despite it, he hopes. that's what his strength often is: belief. maya's has always been certainty. ]

[ charlotte has theories, but erika is so resistant she's not quite sure her input would help beyond what she's given her already. more than anything she wishes to be there for her, as a friend and a sister in spirit. perhaps she has more in common with james than she previously believed. ]
