Maybe he didn't need to thank her... but he felt like he did. Like those were the only words he could say, the only way he could express just how much what she'd done - what she was doing - meant to him. Most of the time, those words didn't even feel like enough, but they were really all he had, and he hoped she could accept them.

Then again, just about everything seemed right when she colored like that as he moved to drape his jacket around her shoulders - and she wasn't the only one thinking it was sort of a nice way to tell the world, We're together and thrilled about it.
