Even if she'd already looked happy, the way she just lit up made him forget that it was actually getting dark around them for a moment. He knew he'd been right in saying something, in not waiting anymore, and the way she looked was worth every bit of nervousness, every bit of hemming and hawing over whether to tell her, when to tell her.
"Well... then I'll see what I can do. Even if it takes a little while, okay?" Which, really, was an unspoken promise not to leave, to make sure she was a part of his life - to make sure he was a part of her life. It might take a while, he was just now getting back on his feet - but he was getting there, and he wanted her to know exactly where he'd be when he finally got there. Or finally got as far as he could go, because the doctors had told him he may never get everything back, and he sure wouldn't make her wait forever. But he did want to make sure he could support her - them - before he promised her anything more, or it simply wasn't fair. And if there was a chance that his memory may come back fully... he wanted to give that a little more time.
