WHEN ONE PARTICLE OF UNOBTANIUM HAS A NUCLEAR REACTION WITH THE FLUX CAPACITOR... WELL, ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE! IN A HIGH SCHOOL CHEM LAB OR YOUR OWN PRIVATE R&D FLOOR ON A MONUMENT BUILT TO THE SKIES WITH YOUR NAME ON IT, IT'S TIME TO GET DOWN AND DIRTY, NERD STYLE. BRAINY IS THE NEW SEXY, SO TURN THAT BUNSEN BURNER ON. IT'S ABOUT TO GET HOT IN HERE.

BIOLOGY | DISSECTIONS AREN'T FOR THE FAINT OF HEART -- OH HEY SPEAKING OF HEART, POKE THAT ONE WITH THE SHARP THING SOME MORE. ARE YOU CUTTING INTO AMPHIBIANS OR HAS THE CLASS SNAKE GOTTEN LOOSE? OR MAYBE YOU'D JUST LIKE TO USE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRY OUT THAT HUMAN ANATOMY LINE YOU'VE HAD AT THE READY SINCE THE FIRST DAY OF THE SEMESTER.

CHEMISTRY | EVERYONE'S GOT IT -- IT MAKES US GO, AND IT CAN MAKE US GO TO OTHERS. HAS YOUR CONCOCTION GONE AWRY? WHO KNOWS WHAT KIND OF EFFECTS A COUPLE OF MISMATCHED ELEMENTS CAN HAVE! ARE YOU A BRILLIANT MIND ON THE NOBLE QUEST FOR A CURE, OR JUST SCREWING AROUND WITH YOUR NOVICE KNOWLEDGE? WILL YOUR ATTEMPTS FIZZLE AND DIE, OR COME BACK TO YOU WITH EXPLOSIVE RESULTS?

PHYSICS | ARGUABLY THE MOST HANDS-ON OF THE SCIENCES, IT'S TIME TO MAKE GRAVITY YOUR BITCH. CONSTRUCT THE CLEVEREST CONTRAPTION TO KEEP AN EGG INTACT FROM A TWO-STOREY DROP, OR, IF YOU'RE FEELING UP TO IT, TRY YOUR HAND AT CREATING A HIGGS-BOSON PARTICLE. (CAN'T BE THAT HARD, CAN IT?) CERTIFIED NONGENIUSES, HAVE NO FEAR, THE TIMEY-WIMEY TECHNOBABBLE IS HERE. REMEMBER, BULLSHIT PHYSICS IS YOUR FRIEND. IF YOU ACCIDENTALLY WIND UP IN ANOTHER DIMENSION WHILE TRYING TO GET TWO MAGNETS OF THE SAME POLARITY TO STICK TOGETHER, WELL, IT HAPPENS.

PSYCHOLOGY | THE SOCIAL EXPERIMENT EXCUSE WILL GET YOU OUT OF ANYTHING ON THE INTERNET, SO HAVE AT. AND ETHICS? WHO NEEDS THOSE. FREUD DIDN'T. ZIMBARDO GAVE NO FUCKS. AND WHAT ABOUT THAT MILGRAM GUY? HE SEEMED LEGIT. SO TAKE A SURVEY, PUT CONDITIONING TO SOME REAL WORLD USE ON AN UNSUSPECTING FRIEND, PLANT MEMORIES WITH HYPNOSIS, OR TAKE A LOOK DEEP INSIDE A ROARSCHACH BLOT AND SEE WHAT YOU CAN FIND OUT ABOUT YOURSELF. JUST BE CAREFUL, THIS COULD GET PERSONAL.

ANYTHING ELSE | THERE ARE MANY AREAS OF STUDY NOT COVERED HERE; DON'T FEEL RESTRICTED TO THESE FOUR OPTIONS. THEY'RE MERELY HERE AS INSPIRATION: GO FORTH AND STRETCH THE BOUNDARIES OF BELIEF HOWEVER YOU CAN. ASTRONOMY, GEOLOGY, ZOOLOGY. I'M ONLY A SCIENTIST IN DISCIPLINES THAT END IN Y.

AND REMEMBER: INERTIA IS A PROPERTY OF MATTER.

[ chemistry, while a subject spock excelled at wasn't his preferred science course. had the school possessed foresight enough to offer astrophysics or elementary engineering courses as an adequate substitution for this particular honors science credit he would have gladly added those to his roster. he waited until the last possible semester to wade through the course and ended up with a class full of strangers. he was glad to be paired off with peter parker as his lab partner, though typically these projects passed in mutual silence. this experiment went entirely differently. ]

The centrifuge runs for a total of twelve minutes, though twelve minutes 48.5 seconds yields more accurate results.

[ Wow, Bones. Mira is almost impressed. She's currently holding one of them (it's better she's in charge with the flammable liquids anyway). Chemistry was more of her thing. She'll go to him once an accident does happens. ]

you people suck at tag order

[personal profile] averse 2012-07-25 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
You're right. You have to add the acid first, Bones, or you wont like the result.

[ labs are suppose to be taken seriously and he's proceeding with caution out of his element. of course, he's also just reading the instructions but he's going to be positive they understand all the procedures thoroughly. ]

Extra credit.

[ Mira has tuned you guys out for right now. Well, until that question. She was busy adding the acid like they're supposed to and getting some of the other containers ready to test. ]

We're just measuring the pH right now.

[ the species is unique, to say the least. they've got about twelve hours before the plague wipes out the last of them, and the entire ship is in a state of organized chaos. jim's jumping between hashing it out with command and trying to communicate with the creature they best guess is in charge.

bones is leading the team trying to isolate the pathogen, but so far they've gotten nowhere. to say that bones is frustrated is to be a genius of understatement, and while he's keeping calm for the team, those who know him well (spock and chris) can tell he's getting more frustrated as time slips from them.

he wants to save them, damnit.

he mutters to himself under his breath as he examines another printout.
]

We barely understand the biology of these creatures and now we're trying to diagnose them? We don't even have an established baseline.

[Jim peers over the edge of the roof at the just-barely visible splatter of yellow yolk on the sidewalk below.]

Well that totally didn't work.

[personal profile] averse 2012-07-25 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
We're not dampening the impact enough.

[ spock doesn't deviate from his focus on his notebook; the sound of the splatter is more than enough. ]

Do you recall the exact height of the building? Perhaps the measurements were inaccurate.

[ they have multiple cartons of eggs, but he wants to solve this with numbers, not trial and error. ]
averse: (leave me alone)

[personal profile] averse 2012-07-25 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
[ spock just levels a gaze at angela. she should just help him read instructions, and he moves the book closer to her to signal that. ]

Improper pH results in a reaction that will give us a failing grade. The combination cannot be overly acidic or basic for our needs.

[ he learned how to speak angela, ok. ]
gregarious: (weapon of mass destruction)

[personal profile] gregarious 2012-07-25 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
[reading. she can handle that. Spock knows her well.]

Okay, so everyone should be like, careful. It says you should wear goggles when you mix the compounds so you don't... [it doesn't say. not on this page.] Like, you know, burn your face or whatever.

We need five test tubes and two beakers.
beneficenced: (don’t let your mind do all your walking)

[personal profile] beneficenced 2012-07-25 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
Test tubes are over in the corner.

[ bones gestures with his head; his hands are busy as he helps mira. technically they already have the test tubes, but it'll keep angela busy and it never hurts to have extras. ]

Do we have the strips yet? You could get the strips, too.
neutrophile: (pic#)

[personal profile] neutrophile 2012-07-25 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
[ yes, keep reading, angela. mira almost went into a full explanation about how to read pH levels herself. in all honesty, this experiment is actually making her a tiny bit nervous with all of the hands. mostly she just wants to get it right. ]

They should be in a plastic bag on the counter.

[ she's fine with angela getting those, if she wants. they don't need them just yet. ]

Thanks. [ mutters to bones, slowly taking one of the beakers from him. déjà vu, huh? but with less running and slamming and liquids flying everywhere. ]

We're three storeys up, Spock. The exact height is "pretty freaking high."

[To be fair, their initial plans had been for the two-storey section of the school where the other students are conducting their trials. But as much as he gets in trouble for fucking around in class all the time, Jim is a young man of ambition. Or at least, you know, a young man of blithely ignoring instructions.]

That was just the prototype, right? [He turns to face Spock, still balancing on the edge, hands shoved into the pockets of his leather jacket.] Maybe Enterprise-D will work out better.

[He nods at the other cardboard model at Spock's feet.]
